    I was taught after first two heat cycles to run the bike hard for next run to seet the rings effectively

    Thanks. But I'll just stick to what the manufacturer asks from me. Warm it up, do 1 hour with 50% throttle, 1 hour with 75% throttle, change the oil, then ride like you stole it.

    Yeah I think idling an engine is horrible on the moter,Jonny's OK though, best moto channel I've found.

    Heard heat cycles are a waste, considering the factory always Dyno the motor before it ever leaves. Which means they run the piss out of it.

  • @pvclassic

    @pvclassic

    Yes they dyno but that does little on what we put these bikes thru. Do yourself a favor and use proper break in. Don't forget to break in suspension properly as well if you plan to use stock or upgrade.

    @@pvclassic we always did break ins after rebuilds. But considering I heard this from a factory mechanic/engine builder who’s worked for factory KTM,Yamaha, Suzuki, building race motors I’ll listen to him. Not to say you should start the bike for the first time and hold it wide open. Be kind to it for a few, but heat cycles and break in procedures aren’t necessary. He mentioned they don’t do anything special to break in factory race motors. Ride it around the pit area and warm it up, but that’s about it. Since I’ve made this comment I’ve heard from a guy who designs and builds motors as a engineer. He parroted the same sentiment. Dont get wrapped around the axel with break ins. Follow the manual, but other than that it’s not worth stressing over. We always did a elaborate silly break in. (Just to give context to the perspective I grew up with and had).

    Don’t let your bikes idle to long because it will create a vacuum chamber and it will burn the radiator fluid

    All the brand new KTMS and Husqvarna’s come broken in from factory. They run them on a dyno before they ship them out. So do 1 heat cycle and then let her rip. Reason why ktm and husky ‘s new bikes are so sweet they come broken in

    I'm pretty sure every manufacturer dyno's their bikes off the production line for quality control purposes. So yes, they've already been wrung out a bit before hitting the dealership floor.

    I think "proper" break-in is a thing of the past since tolerances are so much better now. I ride new bikes hard but change the oil more frequently in the beginning to get rid of metal shavings from the new engine.

    SERIOUS QUESTION: Is it normal for white smoke to emit from the exhaust with less than an hour total riding (Brand new straight out the dealer)? Is it the brand new oil lubing up a brand new engine? I have a 2020 YZ250F and no I’m not talking about condensation

    I had exactly the same phenomenon on my kawasaki 250 2020, I made a topic about it. It's a manufacturing defect, all 2020 models are recalled in store to change the valve springs. thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/1338428-video-brand-new-kawi-250-kxf-smoke-at-cold-start/?tab=comments#comment-15570413

    I know as far as proper break in is concerned, i recently bought a brand new out board, 300 Suzuki, if u dont do a proper break in, and u run into issues down the road, Suzuki will not honor the 5 year warranty, they will read the APU to see how u did the break in, they are able to do that...... Yeah, outboards v dirt bikes, but with the electronics onboard these things these days, if the manufacturer wants a break in, i'll take the time to do it, it cant hurt....

    27tb I bought a brand new 2019 250SXF as well. Did the first oil change at 1.5 hours. Oil wasn’t black but had some shavings. So I’d say 1.5 -2 hours is good. That includes oil and filter.
