How To Propagate Purslane

This video is all about how to propagate purslane, if I could do it in the Texas drought and heatwave, you can do it too! The whole process is very simple, takes only a month or two, and adds a ton of ornamental value to your backyard garden.
I hope this garden tour is entertaining, educational, and inspiring.
Thanks again for watching Austin Texas Gardening!

I know this is a purslane video, and I love it! It’s a super food! Buuut, what is the variety of olives? I have 9 I have been limping along for years until I can decide where to plant them.

What do I do with my purslane now that it’s fall? How do I keep it over winter. Mine is all in pots. I live in Burnet. Thanks! And yes, God made us all to live in His beautiful garden- and we WILL live with Him again someday! ❤😊

I'm gonna try to keep some of mine alive in containers in my garage under a heatlamp (its all we can do because they cant handle a freeze), you could also take cuttings and transplant them inside for the winter, though they probably wont get enough light worst case scenario, we can always get more purslane from a local nursery or hardware store in the spring

@@AustinTexasGardening I never imagined anyone buying purslane. All I knew about was the yellow kind that that abundantly self-seeds itself. It is delicious, and grown as a vegetable in many parts of the world. (To eat the plant, harvest it before the flower buds form. It gets tough as it ages. Americans typically call it a weed.) I didn't know this annual would grow from cuttings. Annuals usually reproduce by seed. I saved a whole lot of seeds from my volunteers by waiting until the flowers formed seeds. I put the plants upside down in a paper bag and shook the plant. I don't know if fancy purslane bought in a store is a hybrid that will have surprises in its seed, or not. It is possible that a hybrid will even be infertile.

how long have you have the mother plant? I’ve read it’s an annual but i’m so in love with it naturally i looked into how to get a few of them!

So, you just stick it back in the ground after you pulled off a few of the leaves?

Thats basically it, just do it in the spring, the heat will kill your cuttings

Did you water propagate or put them right into the soil?

I put them right in the soil, the ones in this video proped well, but direct in the soil doesn’t work with July 2023’s highs of 105

I came looking for more information on how common purslane propagates itself, as in my garden it's a pest! It never occurred to me someone would grow it intentionally unless they liked eating it.🤷 To each their own. Keep that thumb green!

You showed very little of the actual propagation technique and didn’t demonstrate it at all. 🤷🏼‍♀️
