How To Propagate Olive Trees.

At Fat Cow Farm Tatong our Kalamata Olive trees needed to be pruned to give all the new flowers and fruit some air and space. Rather than mulching the branches and add to the soil we decided to propagate some new olive trees so we can plant out next year along our soil hydration swales.

Ha, I have the opposite problem - how to get rid of the zillion volunteers that sprout from dropped oilves. Have 20 mature, mostly fruiting olives on my new property. A nightmare tree around hardscape - and they weren't pruned in at least a decade so getting 30' trees into some sort of shape while working off ladders and pole saws is a royal pain. Bought the home after fruit set this year and now dealing with what seems like 10 billion olives dropping day and night. For sure need to spray to stop fruiting around homes. They do make a great mulch - smells like a tapanade when going thru the shredder. I like running thru twice to get a fine mulch. Makes an effective weed barrier as it settles and forms a bit of a crust.

Make sure you choose the olive tree mother that has produced the most fruit in years past. Don't waste the remainder branches, mulch them up and place around the existing trees to keep the moisture in the soil and you'll be ready for summer. Let me know how it goes, I'll see you soon!

Great video "Fat Cow Farmer" and G'Day from Sapelo Olive Farm in Georgia, USA! I just propgated 129 x Arbequina Olive trees in perlite high humidity terrarium environment. I pre-soaked the cuttings in in 8.5 Ph water for 24 hours to remove root inhibitors prior to dipping in IBA-K rooting hormone. Actually, I am trying two different brands of hormone to see how they do. I have them in a 12 by 20 inch Terrarium where I keep the humidty at 99% at 72 deg F. I'll let you know how they perfom in generating new roots within the next 60-days (2 Jan 22)...I'm so, excited to see how they turn out!

I have not used rooting hormone yet but will be getting some from bunnings tonight and going to start making some more cuttings. It’s so much fun doing this too and saves money on buying more trees.

Hi, let's say that the method of creating cuttings takes much longer to obtain large and productive plants, you can certainly produce a large number in the number, as long as there is a good percentage of these that manage to root sufficiently, but I have wanted to try another old technique, updating it and making it more productive, this is much more functional and limited in obtaining adult and productive plants, for example I made plants the previous year and then planted them in free land the following year, now they are there and producing and enjoying excellent health. The Margotta method is nothing more than the perfect clone (a branch) deriving from the mother or donor plant, such as a cutting, but with the advantage, I repeat, of already having in a year, a much larger plant in the structure and already capable to produce fruits, in a much shorter time, and you know that this is very important, this technique can be used for all fruit plants, including agruni. Personally I made more than 250 plants that I buried last year, they produce olives, such as other fruit species (lemon, cedar, grapefruit, pomegranate or peach) obviously in the number allowed by their age and size, differently from an adult plant, when you separate them, they become a real and autonomous productive plant, identical to the donor plant, being this generated from a branch of that mother, I made Margotte on four very widespread and resistant to parasites and frost species, all Italian Mediterranean, species: the "Frantoio", "Leccino", "Moraiolo" (this pollinator 10 plants out of a total mixed of 250) "Carboncella", "Itrana" (lower Lazio for table consumption and oil production, also some plants of the Region Liguria, also in this case the Olive tree is a producer of oil and precious table species "La Taggiasca" plants, two, now in production in a new olive grove, positioned 6 meters away from each other. V. ide with English subtitles about technique, the link of my video with English subtitles is about this technique is this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iH6C0KqCY73PhJM.html

The only thing I can think about crafting is the root stock strength. In Australia we call fruit grown from seed (bush plants). Some say they take longer to fruit by about a year. This doesn't worry us but in saying that our first olives have fruit, although very juvenile they are way to small to bear any fruit and we pick them off to give more energy in growing rather than fruiting. Cheers

I am on the equator in SA and have 26 C weather year round. I have olive trees imported from Spain but have never produced fruit. The reason is that the tree must experience daytime temps of about 10 C for at least 30 days. We have tried to propagate the trees for years, but so far no luck. We finally sent the cuttings up into the Andes with a friend where it is colder and the cuttings are still alive after a couple months. Amazing. It seems from our experience that part of the success in propagation is in ambient temperature and humidity. With any luck we are hoping to get fruit at the colder and higher elevations.

There must be some olive trees in your local area that you could take cuttings from. I'm originally from Cairns Far North Queensland in Australia which is kinda close to the equator and we can't grow any stone fruits. Its just too humid. Hope this helps, thanks for watching. Cheers

@@danielben-avraham1539 The olives that we propagate in winter are done in the hoop house so they don't freeze, and when the spring arrives they are taken out side. At about 500 - 600mm height i plant them out during the warmer months. The biggest issue i have are the cockies, they seem to love the olive leaves. Good luck!

Hey JS, We get fairly heavy frosts and very rearly snow. I use the Cortina Olives for oil and the kalamata for eating. I'm sure you could order something online. I'm having good luck with these two varieties in these conditions. Good luck. Cheers

@@JS-jh4cy Hey JS, I would think you could ship from overseas into Canada. The time line for shipping would be too great and the chances of the olive seedling serving would be fairly slim. Let me know, Cheers

Hi there, i haven't tried, however if you file the husk away from the pointed end of the seed until you see the white skin, soak the seed over night to saturate and then plant out. Well drained soil and keep moist. Good luck.
