How to propagate & grow Colocasia plants (Taro)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Dividing colocasia plants is a common method of propagation that involves separating the plant's root system into smaller sections, each with its own stem and leaves. Here are the general steps for dividing colocasia plants:
Choose the right time: The best time to divide colocasia plants is in the spring, just as new growth begins to emerge.
Prepare the plants: Water the plants thoroughly the day before you plan to divide them. This will help to loosen the soil and make it easier to work with.
Dig up the plant: Use a garden fork or shovel to carefully dig up the entire plant, taking care not to damage the roots.
Separate the sections: Gently pull apart the root system into smaller sections, each with its own stem and leaves. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut through any thick roots that cannot be separated by hand.
Replant the sections: Plant each section in a new location, making sure to plant it at the same depth as it was originally growing. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.
Care for the new plants: Continue to water the newly divided plants regularly and provide them with the same care as you would for mature colocasia plants.
Dividing colocasia plants can help to rejuvenate overgrown plants, create new plants for your garden or indoor collection, and promote healthy growth. With proper care, your newly divided colocasia plants should thrive and provide you with many years of enjoyment.
Colocasia, also known as taro, is a tropical plant that is often grown for its large, attractive foliage. Here are some tips on how to grow colocasia plants:
Climate and soil: Colocasia plants prefer warm temperatures and high humidity. They thrive in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter.
Watering: These plants require frequent watering to keep the soil moist. However, it's important to avoid overwatering, as this can cause root rot.
Sunlight: Colocasia plants prefer partial shade, but they can tolerate some direct sunlight.
Fertilizer: These plants benefit from regular fertilization with a balanced fertilizer.
Pests and diseases: Colocasia plants are susceptible to a number of pests and diseases, including aphids, spider mites, and bacterial leaf spot. It's important to monitor your plants regularly and take action at the first sign of a problem.

Great video Craig. You’ve got to love Colocasias. I had a Metallica I bought for £5 at the end of last summer, I kept it in an unheated bathroom and noticed stolons coming from it. I cut some off and put them in soil, 1 week later I had 2 new Colocasias growing!

Just discovered your great channel and invaluable help for my new tropical border. I recently bought an Alocasia - also called Elephant Ear, do these need to be treated exactly the same as Colocasia ?

I grow `Aloha`, `White Lava` and `Black Magic`. Every year I try some new varities. They are started up on the baathroom which is the warmest place in my house. This year I try `Fharaohs mask`. They are overwintered in the bedroom by 14 degrees and added some plant light. The esculenta I grow in the ground and dig up in late autumn (Denmark) and keep at 8 degrees in a greenhouse during winter.

Hi, i have a doubt. I planted a colocasia for fun tbh but it grew into this beautiful plant. Being a newbie i wondered whether you could help me I planted this around march and its may now and i noticed some tiny plantlets growing just near the main stem and im not sure whether its a form of vegetative propogation or its just weeds because the leaves are tiny like i said they look like tiny plantlets so should i remove them or replant them in another pot? (P.S. im a real newbie, no hate please ❤)
