BUG!!!! I loved that. I've been "thinking" about HAM radio for a long time but knew I didn't have the time to mess with it. I am now doing the whole social distancing thing with the worldwide pandemic and figured I'm going to need something to dive into while at home to prevent me from going crazy. I found out about you on Fieldcraft Survival's podcast and I really like your channel. I grabbed the BF-F8HP and the cable from your link and I ordered a UV-5RMK3X to have a second one to keep at our second house. Thanks for all of the incredible content, I want a mobile already and I haven't even programmed my cheap handhelds.

Im waiting on my UV-5R as I study for my tech and your videos are very nice, crisp, and in focus. The reason I purchased this radio is to listen and learn the lingo so when I pass my tech I can transmit. Thanks for your videos.

Thanks for this video. I followed it to the note and it worked perfectly. The current V5r comes with a USB cable in the box. It didn't work on my Win7 machine until I installed the Radio Reference drivers so thank you for that tip.

The real video starts @6:45 "Radio ...Radio.. I want that... " ....[well,ya gotta wait] "....ok daddy." That's priceless. ... I'm a computer geek and work from home, and have an office on the lower floor of our house. I'll always treasure the memories from ~5 years ago when my son (age 2-3 at the time) would arrive at home from daycare, and he'd rush to the staircase - crawling backwards down the stairs - shouting "Are you down dare daddy?! .... Daddy are you down dare... !?" ..and then seeing his little feet pop into view and him slide down the steps beyond the railing and come running to jump on my lap. Cherish those days, hoshnasi sir.

Also each radio came with 2 batteries, Tidradio NA-771 & Standard antennas, Cigarette lighter charger, Earpiece/Microphone and a Handheld Microphone/Speaker and all the other standard stuff. Learning a ton from your videos, at 56 i'm a late starter in the Ham Hobby going for tech license hopefully soon.

Was looking for a quick and dirty video on using Chirp and the Baofeng. Found a few that were 45mins or 30mins and opted out. Then I found your video and it was exactly the right length, exactly the right information, and very well presented. Thank you. If KZread still did the star rating system, I'd give 5 Stars. Thanks again.

I don't use Mac's OS. I discontinued using Windows 13 years ago. I use Linux. I purchased the $20 cable, installed Chirp, and Linux recognized the F8HP. I downloaded the contents of the radio memory. Then I selected to load the repeater directory for my State and several county's. I had to log on paper what frequencies I wanted and the particular settings. I could not cut and paste them to a clipboard. I later tried cut and paste the parameters to the specific repeater pairs and settings to a plain text editor and was able to copy and paste into the chirp programming grid. Thanks for the video. You just forgot to mention the other popular OS. HI

This is a really great tutorial, its only missing one thing. if you get a "Radio did not respond" error, baofeng's instructions say some radios may have a offset audio jack, so it may require a really hard push, which it does, it will go in about another 1/16th of an inch, and it will work.

Question: Just to be 100% sure I never accidentally transmit on scanner channels, my understanding is that you can program TX on those channels to only transmit to a selected FRS or GMRS frequency. Is this correct? Just want to avoid transmitting if the PTT button accidentally gets pressed. Thanks in advance.

Open up Chirp and under the "duplex" column set the frequencies you DON'T want to TX on to duplex "OFF" and that will disable TX. You can also set it up to "skip" those frequencies in the skip column and select "S" if you want.

I think its great compared to using a cheap projector menu that I do often and cry when no remote is around. I think the chip inside is called ftdi and it is basically a serial com port adapter.

Josh, I ordered the $8 cable from Amazon, and found this video while I was waiting for it to arrive. Sure enough, it wasn't recognized by Win10 and my UV-5RX3 wasn't seen either. I'm not installing third party drivers for something so simple. I sent the cable back and got the $20 cable, and sure enough - it worked on the first try. My difficulty is that I have to use the UV5X setting to connect to my radio (the 5X3 setting doesn't work), and it won't program 220MHz repeaters. I'll keep trying.

The generic Chinese cables marked as "Baofeng" use the CH340 chip-set which works fine with Windows using the correct drivers. FDTI cables are more expensive, and you are correct in what you say as far as direct support is concerned, but the cheap cables work just fine if you haven't already spent stupid amounts of cash on a crApple Mac in the first place. I've had zero problems with them and a Windows 7 PC. Great channel, by the way and thanks!

  • @HamRadioCrashCourse

I’ve never used the generic cable without it needing more work, even on Windows. Due to this, I only recommend the FTDI cable as plug and play in almost all situations. As you can expect, I get many emails, comments and DMs. If I recommended generic cable I’d become a full-time Baofeng IT support center.

I have the bf-f9 v2+ and the cheap cable. chirp gave me a read error on both the uv-5r and bf-f8hp is it just the driver or is it the radio? I seen a thing on the chirp wiki that said that the firmware is stopping it from being cloned

The cheap cable has driver issues. If you don't have the driver disc it came with, you might need to buy the FTDI cable I link in the description.

+Phillip Reid I totally recommend just biting the bullet and buying the better cable. I've gone through two other cheap cables and fought it for HOURS trying to make it work. Then I bought the more expensive cable and the problems VANISHED. Great cable. Check out the link to my aStore. The genuine cable is linked.

HowI have the BF-F8HP, how far should I search for repeaters around me when I'm programming in Chirp? At 10 miles I get only 3 repeaters, at 20 I get a dozen, at 30 miles I get about 25. Just curious as to what would be a good distance to go. Still learning all this stuff, thanks in advance.

I would like to program it as a scanner of local authorities but do not want to lose the programming originally on it. is this a possibility? can the chirp programming see the frequencies already preprogrammed on the radio and save that?

New cable worked like a charm on my Mac. Have a weird problem though with my F8HP. I switch between UHF/VHF mode (menu #33) and the radio is supposed to show the floor frequency of either UHF or VHF. It does not. It also will not let me separately select VHF/UHF for A/B. If I select A as UHF the B is also UHF. The mode is global and its not supposed to be. Have you seen this?

Baofeng tech just emailed me back. Great tech response from them BTW. Took less than 30 mins on a late Sunday night. They said after 2014 the radio automatically switches bands when you change frequency. The menu item (#33) is a relic of the old firmware I guess.

I get no beep or acknowledgment when plugged in to the computer. No drop down menu listing the radio like your video. I went ahead and ordered your cable in the hopes that it will work. Until then do you have any suggestion. I am getting leary dL too many open source apps to get this working.

Since this was uploaded nearly three years ago, are you still running into counterfit cables today? This concerns me as I bought not from your a-store, sorry but a bundle UV-5R I hooked it up to my computer and I was able to upload the frequencies that were programmed into the radio from the factory. I think I will buy the cable anyway from your a-store. I hope the radio wasn't counterfiet.

Hi Josh, Have a BF-F8HP in my shopping cart (along with a real FTDI cable - I'm kindof a serial port snob) and I decided to head back to YT for one more round of obsession before clicking the purchase now button and here you are lighting candles like you're preparing for some dark ritual of horror getting ready to program. Dude! you almost cost me my mellow for a few moments! Seriously though, new sub here - appreciate the effort you put into the information you share. Wife came home from a county emergency preparedness meeting and the local ACS/ARES gang was there. Next thing I know the wife is telling me she wants to get a HAM radio for just in case and that she thought I might enjoy getting into it. So... I started hunting a bit. unbelievable what money will buy now! Took an online practice test tonight for technician and passed it, will kill my order and gladly replace it with links from your affiliate store. Then I'll be off to look up one of the guys from the ACS/ARES group. Should be easy, I already know the house he lives in, it rather reminds me of a porcupine. Rather looking forward to this, it's been many years since I've done much playing with radio. Used to be in Civil Air Patrol (many years ago) and had an old Heathkit HW-18 at home that I would chat from Washington state to Hawaii on pretty regularly. Sorry about the short book here, but wanted to just take a moment and say thanks! Best regards, - Bill

Well, the deed is done now, radio will be here tomorrow and programming cable the next day. Tuesday night is training on the ARES repeater and awaiting the county guy's response. Dangit - this is fun, I wasn't looking for another hobby but this looks way too practical not to get involved with. The down-side of this is I am a fairly avid electronics tinkerer and from what I'm seeing, things like packet radio don't seem like too great of a stretch. Oh, dear!!!
