How To Program A Drum Track Using MIDI In Reaper DAW Recording Software
A step by step guide to creating your first MIDI drum track in Reaper (or any other DAW) for complete beginners. Accompanying resources at www.musicrepo.com/program-fir...
** New Video Uploaded ** you may want to watch my newest drum programming video where I show you how to use the FREE MT Power Drum Kit with Reaper. Once you know how to use MT Power Drum Kit you can follow this tutorial step by step, and use the MT instead of the TTS I use here. Works in exactly the same way.

Hi, Thanks for the videos. When I double click on my new track it opens up the piano roll just like you did but , on the left hand side I'm seeing a keyboard and not the blanks where I can import the drum names. What am I doing Wrong? Thanks!

Simply fantastic tutorial! Exactly the stuff you need to avoid hours of headaches just to get going as a beginner!
Hi, thanks for tutorial, just a little feedback - 8:30 when you select to quantize only selected notes, it actually unquantizes your other notes, that you have already quantized (kick, snare).
This should be the standard on how to make a tutorial. It was so incredibly helpful. I'm not kidding, I was able to record my first drum track immediately after watching this video. All using headphones without disturbing my neighbors. And I've never studied drums before. So thank you so much and all the best!

You’re my new god! I spent so many days reading forums and messing around and could not get my Alesis Strike Pro kit to record on Reaper. Thanks so much for this tutorial. So simple and it’s all working!
I'm just starting on Reaper and this in incredibly helpful and beautifully done! Thank you!
Great tutorial! Tis is the clearest and most useful reaper video i've seen so far. You covered a lot more than just drums. Just migrated to reaper from the built in DAW on my Korg. Now if I could get sorted on replication/repeats I'd be sorted.
A very great step-by-step demonstration of how to program a MIDI track.

GOOD I'm starting and I've seen dozen of videos on HOW TO on your DAW.... This is the first one that actually worked. You get to the point, mention critical things, don't waste time on silly things and don't spend time showing off how cool you are and how awesome and incredible things you can do. Great video. 10 minutes were I actually did learn something.

i learned a lot from your vids. thanks!
just started with reaper im learning from scratch i love you!!!!
Covered every question I had about setting up drum grooves in Reaper. Very well done. See comment below about the fact that when you quantized the hand claps, you actually "unquantized" the other drums. Something else handy to know is that once you have set up the groove, you can send different notes to different channels and use the Reasampler, Slate Trigger etc. to use different drums sounds for each drum. It takes a bit to set up but once it's done you can reuse it.

A really easy to follow and informative post. Thanks!!
Really helpful. Thank you so much for sharing..Love
Your videos are always great! I'm a non-drummer, have been playing with Reaper for a while, got a midi controller, and wanted to learn the most basic of basics with regards to making drum beats. This looks like what I'm looking for. I'll use this as well as the updated video you made for using MT Power Drum Kit. One question for you, not urgent, just if you happen to know off the top of your head: Have you played around with the kit you used for THIS video recently? If so, would be interested to know your thoughts with how the current version compares to the versions (reaper and cakewalk) you used when making this original video. Thanks again for your great content!
This is really excellent. Thanks!

Thank you for the wonderful tutorial. I did this a couple of weeks and it worked well. Today when I'm trying to lay down some drum beats, I get drum sounds on the virtual keyboard but only piano sounds on my connected midi keyboard. I'm set on channel 10. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks again! Super video I´ve created my first drum midi track
Hi there...its 2020 (i know right..!!??!! ) and this video is still extremely useful...just watched it and am going to utilize virtually every single concept mentioned here on Reaper this very night. I hadn't even looked into it yet and i noticed this on the sidebar and thought 'ooh thats timely'....i laughed when i saw the video was 5 years old...it was released just in time for me to find it five years later..... Phew !!! that was lucky...
Exactly what I needed, thank you
Very helpful, thanks!
Ohhh! I understand. I downloaded a different drum kit and will have to figure out how to use it! I am a beginner with this program and this type of thing in general. Thanks!

Ah, must have Cakewalk TTS-1 because I have a couple of Cakewalk DAWs installed too. My bad. You can get round this if you don't have a Virtual GM instrument by enabling the MS Wavetable Synth in the MIDI settings, and then routing the hardware output of the track to that Synth.

Great video, Thank you Jane! Can you please point the way on how to use the MT-PowerDrumKit with the Reaper FX titled, "JS: MIDI Sequencer Megababy"? Thank you for your time.
Thanks this worked great for programing drums, but when I recorded my guitar over the drums everything was out of time upon playback. Do you have a video about solving this problem?
Hey - If I go into new virtual track mine doesnt have your options, how could it be?
I had to install the new version for Mac Catalina. I can't fine add new virtual instrument on the drop down
How can someone in the world click on dislike for this video? Thank you very much, you helped a lot! Regards from Brazil.
I have just recently purchased reaper & found this video which was exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately the instrument Cakewalk TTS-1 does not appear in my list of instruments?
If I use MIDI controller Arturia MiniLab with Analog Lab 3 program, could I to record my own music with the sounds from Analog Lab or Akai MPK MiniPlay?
Super helpful video

Is there a way to use your own drum samples in place of what cakewalk has?
Around 5:19 -- I tried to customize the names of the drum track as you explained at this time. However, I do not have the option to do so under "file." Would anyone tell me what's going on with this?
Hey great video, but how do i name the drum sounds?? i saw you already have a file, but i dont....
An alternative to using the arrow key to scroll to the note you want on the virtual keyboard, is to right click on a particular note. Right-clicking on a note will centre the note on the virtual keyboard, and may bring other, desired notes within easier reach.

cheers for that little tip. thanks :)
awesome..could you please tell me how to convert drum sheet music
sooo how can I pre progam the notes, I am not very good with timeing when it gets very convoluted.
thank you great video ! but i'm missing many instruments.. i do not see TTS drum , nor FREE MT POWER why is that, how can i add them?
What I can't figure out is how to make a 2nd drum beat (ie a chorus beat). I can make a beat, just can't get the second one started.
