How to prepare your raspberry patch for summer | Gardening 101 | Gardening Australia

Hannah's getting her raspberry patch in order before summer. She’s prepping a bed to be her new raspberry patch. It’s in full sun, and there’s manure and compost in the soil. It’s mounded for improved drainage, and she’s experimenting with jute mat as a mulch.
Hannah’s planting a summer fruiting variety called “Chilcotin”, and they’ve come bare-rooted, so it’s important to get them into the ground ASAP. She’s also transplanting some canes over from her already established patch.
Summer fruiting raspberry canes only produce fruit once, and then die off. That’s the time to prune them. Keep canes that haven’t fruited yet. Canes can be differentiated by scratching back bark; green are still living and should be retained; brown means they can be removed. Plaiting canes can help keep them upright and separated.
Autumn fruiting varieties send up fresh growth every time, so can be cut down to ground after fruiting.
Hannah spaces her raspberry canes 30cm apart, and packs firmly to hold upright.
A woodchip border keeps weeds out and raspberry cane suckers in.

Fantastic video! Greetings from Yacolt Washington. I’m adding a lot of different berries this year. Boysenberries, Marionberries, Tayberries, Loganberries, Pink blueberries and more raspberries!
Good to get some raspberry growing advice from someone who lives less than 1 kilometre away!
My favorite scene in Amelie is when she eats fresh raspberries off each finger tip. Thank you Hannah and family!

Brambles are great, I have used them as a front fence Just put up two trellis along the front and plant in the middle, the trellis keeps them from going everywhere.

Hi, could you please do a video on how to fill a large raised bed for vegetables? I have 2 on the way (740mm high by 2500mm long). Hard to find info online. Do you put newspaper down on lawn first? Is that German method of filling the bottom half of bed with tree stumps/logs good? Weed mat? Lots of people are buying raised beds fro Bunnings etc so it would be really helpful! Also where to get soil from? City people don’t have ginormous compost heaps in yard. (Yet). Thank you

hi I noticed no response you your question so I thought I'd let you know what I have :) I put a layer of cardboard then any sticks, dry leaves etc to fill out the bottom a little then I fill with mushroom compost then a layer of sugar cane mulch all which is available at Bunnings ( I live on a property but I think this applies to any raised bed garden or no dig garden, I have a combo of both ) and I've made new beds with these items during lockdown. if you can't get or don't like mushroom compost as your soil they sell vegetable garden bed soil also .... hope this helps :)

For info, when you create Hugel beds using logs and branches as the base, you are creating an ideal home for mice, rats and snakes. Best to use rotting wood that doesn't create as many air pockets in the bed.
Bought one raspberry plant it fruited and I bought seven more. Store ones are tasteless and gross

The ones I bought had a sticker saying that the plant was copywrite and that I would be prosecuted if I split the plant, or propagated in anyway. Had a bit of a giggle when the plant sent out suckers and filled the raspberry patch all by its copywrited self. They taste yummy and I have to fight off birds and the hens.

@@tsunamis82 hahahaha little rebels. I had a similar sticker on a finger lime, champagne red I think it was. I think it was more about selling them. I have a few new canes popping up too. Can't wait for this year's. I have a heap of currants I'm hoping will fruit too.

@@XxDuhBirdsxX yeah I put one out the back in full sun for 80% of the day in outback SA 😆 didn't last very long. I put a shade cloth over the top and let it droop and it's just coming back with a few new canes quite a distance from the main one I was quite surprised, it's my first time owning a garden and within two years have bought over 50 different fruiting plants I got addicted haha love going to the plant shops. It's fun seeing how things grow and sad finding out what doesn't. I had some kiwiberry vines that died but I bought some fruit they were delicious. Sorry about the rant😆
