How to PRACTICE dancing EFFECTIVELY

Ойын-сауық

The best way…in my opinion. You wouldn’t practice free throws by playing basketball and hoping to get fouled, right? You’d practice set-up, wrist and arm action, follow-through, and then get REPS in. Maybe after that you’d get some of your teammates to put added pressure on you while you get reps in. Why would you treat dance any differently?
This is a recap from our class at Remix Weekly on April 24th, 2024. We gave a lot more detail about developing drills, getting quality repetition, and making the most out of that ever elusive partnered practice time. If you’d like to bring this workshop to your event or community, contact me at keeriganruddWCS@gmail.com.
Instructors are Keerigan Rudd and Julie Winspear.

As someone who came of age in the disco era, it's so nice to see young people engaged in more traditional dance partnering. This makes me feel like such an old fogey, but it's true!

I liked the emphasis of this class on learning to practice. I felt like it was a great set of common sense things to be taught, to remind us what practicing is really best for, and how to approach it in the West Coast Swing context. A great lesson to have early on in my dance, I feel like it will help me be much more effective and efficient with my practice time moving forward. I may or may not also start working on a spreadsheet as well.

I really like this approach. However, I need help coming up with a list. I never know WHAT to practice, and if what I am practicing I'm doing correctly (I don't want to be reinforcing bad habits thinking that I'm doing it correctly)

What to practice comes from a couple things: 1. Actually practicing the things we learn in workshops/group classes. So many people (including myself) will record that recap video and then never look at it/practice it again. 2. Private lessons-having a professional diagnose the issues you’re facing in your dance and give you new techniques and concepts to develop. Always ask your teacher HOW to practice these things as well-get solo and partnered drills from them that you can use. I like what Jesse Lopez and Ariel Peck say: Imperfect practice makes progress. There’s no way to do something perfectly when you practice every time, but practicing in general will develop those skills (which can be tweaked through private lessons, workshops, and personal feedback from practice partners) and body awareness.
