euphoric parker I said potty time when she pooped. Then at some point it clicked and she pooped on command. I’ve heard another way to train them is to put them on their play area to poop and they learn to poop there and not on you. So when you anticipate that they will poop after about 8-10 min you put them up and get them back on you when they are done pooping.

However he flies around the house and when he lands on my shoulder or on my fingers I do not know how many minutes ago he last pooped and he ends up pooping on me. I’ve tried asking him if he needs to go poopey but the doesn’t understand what I’m asking. How can I fix this? Thanks

I hope u remember birds is a lifelong commitment. A cockatiel can live up to 15-20 years and is a lot of work bcos they love lots of attention. If you are willing to take responsibility that long then its good to get a pair. But if not willing to shoulder responsibility then don't get any bird because you will be shock to know how many abandoned birds there are.

I also don't want to just leave them in a cage all day. I get it if for the first couple weeks they do it, but how would I get them to go to the right place? I had a dog, and when he wanted to go out, he would hold it in and get us to come to the door. That was his way of telling us that he wanted or needed to go out. Will a bird do that? Hold it in and let us know how what he wants?

it's just so that they learn the cue. if nothing happens and they do nothing when the cue is given, they won't learn the cue. if they are not rewarded for ignoring the command then they will learn that they need something. if you get the timing right, and they go potty, then they can be rewarded. they learn very quickly what to do and what not to do when given the cue.

I would like to get a cockatiel at some point, and this seems to work if you're with them most of the time, but what if i leave my house for a couple hours? If i put the bird in its cage when i leave, will it use the restroom on its own or will it just hold it in until i get back? If so that doesnt seem healthy. If i am there and i tell the bird to potty, but he doesn't, and i set him down on a perch or on/in his cage and leave him alone, will it use the restroom on/in its cage if i dont give it a command? Or will it just poop wherever it feels like it if i'm not constantly telling it to go potty every 15 minutes? if not that seems like a lot of work, like i would have to babysit it all the time. How do you get any work/housework done if you have to come running to let the bird out every 15 minutes?

When you put him on your hand to tell him to go potty you’re out of the picture you need to stand where he’s in the picture more

my bird actually tells me about potty by making some gestures after every 20 to 30 minutes and i let him go for 5 to 10 seconds, but when he sits on my daddy's chest, shoulder or even hands, he poops every 5 minutes on him 😃😃😃😃
