How to pop kiteboarding - Unhooked

Welcome to our latest playlist. The unhooking fundamentals. With freestyle kiteboarding being so advanced these days it can be overwhelming. Strangely, unhooked riding has a weird reputation. You see it all over in the magazines and in pro rider videos yet, on the local beach it has become far less common.
Often people are worried that it's too intense or dangerous. In truth unhooking is one of the most fun aspects of kiteboarding. If you learn to do it right, it's actually easy and just as safe as hooked in riding.
Most often the biggest fear comes from catching an edge and hard impacts. If you take time to practice the fundamentals and don't ride over powered you'll be surprised how fast you progress and how much fun it can be.
To kick off this new playlist we're going to start with the most important move in hooked in or unhooked kiteboarding. The pop. The goal of this video is to break it down into easy to practice steps so you can work your way up and establish good habits in your riding early. So whether you're a rank beginner or an intermediate kiteboarder, give this guide a look over and see how you can improve your pop.

    I started playing around with unhooking a little bit last summer and can now pretty consistently land unhooked backrolls. That being said, I'm looking to progress and am wondering if I should switch to riding with boots or if you think it's realistic to continue riding in straps? Either way, I'm psyched on these videos! Thanks Rygo!

  • @MACkiteboarding

    @MACkiteboarding

    It's more technique than strength. Freestyle kites have pop & slack so they take less strength, Do it all kites have more consistent pull so they take more. To counter that, you just go faster to keep up with the bar, Cheers! - Rygo

    Thank you so much for this video! I have to questions for you: - how do I know if I’m with the correct size of Kite when unhooked? - would you consider to change from using straps to boots on my Kiteboard? Thanks! Greetings from Argentina

  • @MACkiteboarding

    @MACkiteboarding

    Patricio Perearnau Cheers mate. Learning with less power is usually best. Pick what other riders your weight are using or a size down. If you stand on the beach with your kite high you can test the power by sheeting in. If the kite pulls you on the balls of your feet, you’re good. If you come off your toes, you have too much power. You can also test when riding upwind. Do a few small hops. They should feel like jumping on a trampoline. It’s better to learn with less power than more. Try the light wind tips at the end of this video. Straps are great for learning because you just fall off the board in most crashes. Boots are fun for powered tricks because you’re locked in. Falls can hurt more in boots if you fall wrong. I’ve a video on leaning how to fall later in the series’s. - Rygo

    Great manual! I try to do an ollie, as at the beginning of the video: kite at 45, unhooked and go downwind, but my SS RPM 10 picks up speed very quickly and I can’t hold it with either one hand or even two hands. How's it going for you to hold an unhooked kite with one hand? How to slack lines and not gain speed when I'm unhooked?

  • @Runner_SMR

    Ryan Goloversic Thanks for the answer. Today I tried again. I noticed an interesting feature of rpm 10m, each unhooked starts to gain very high speed, took another kite core gts 12 and all done - olli with unhooked bar in one hand! at the end of the set he even made my first surfpasses! Thanks for the instructions from your other video. (I couldn’t make them on RPM because of the crazy increasing speed in unhooked. Maybe this is a feature of rpm?)

    I can do that my friend. Actually the best thing you could do would be to practice just coming off edge and unhooking and hooking back in on light wind days. Use the drills from these two videos here. doesn't being unhooked put the kite in max power? i.e. as if the bar was fully pulled in ALL time time? isn't that a bit dangerous?!!

  • @MACkiteboarding

    @MACkiteboarding

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not if you’re riding the correct size kite and using the right technique. It’s safer than wakeboarding in my opinion. If you want to take power out of the kite, you simply come off edge and ride downwind. You’re also only unhooked for the trick, not all the time. That said, it’s not for everyone. Unhooked riding takes more strength, skill and time to learn. It also opens a lot more range of motion and possibles for tricks. Basically it makes kiteboarding look ands feel like a boardsport. Either way I hope you enjoy learning about this side of the sport! Cheers - Rygo
