How to Play Your First Rhythm on Bongos--A Lesson for Beginners
Ойын-сауық
This is the first rhythm taught in the video "Bongo Grooves for Beginners" by Alan Dworsky, available as a download or a DVD at www.dancinghands.com. Designed for the first-time hand drummer, the video teaches fun, funky grooves--including The Habanera, Calypso, Tumbao, Bombo, and the Backbeat Groove--that fit with all kinds of music. The video features clear, step-by-step instruction, a non-traditional approach, techniques that are easy on your hands, play-along tracks, a PDF file with charts of all the patterns, tips on tuning and how to hold the bongos, and examples of how to use the grooves to play along with recorded music or jam with your friends.

With chill voice, beat, and easy to follow instruction, you're the Bob Ross of bongos! Thanks for this and looking forward to playing more.

Great info for beginners. Why do people leave bad reviews for this. Its pretty niche. If you dont like bongos, why are you watching? I find it quite amazing that someone with absolutely no interest in playing the bongos would watch this and leave a comment. Did you search for boobs and bongos came up by mistake. If you dont like what your watching, turn it off and watch something else or read a book or go for a walk. Have a life!! Im interested in learning how to play the bongos, so this is very interesting to me.

This is exactly the rhythm that my music director at church was trying to teach me. Thanks to your video I now know what he meant. I'll be playing it tomorrow.
I stumbled upon your video in a first grade class today. They wanted to see the Drum video! We all think you are a wonderful teacher! I love how you define your words and take your time. One of my first graders picked up this rhythm right away! We had a GREAT time! Thanks for great content!!
Excellent introduction. Many advanced players have trouble understanding what it looks like for beginners, but you show people how to layer the sound by adding complexity to an underlying simple pattern.
Bongos have been especially helpful with my endeavor to quit smoking. Keeping my hands busy. Thank you for the "Habanera" lesson.
Watching this video after 11 year from posting
People always say that when someone is really good at something, they can make it look easy and effortless. And that's exactly what you have done here! Clear explanation and easy to follow, thank you :D
Great feeling ! The beat, the way you progressively get into the final beat composition ! And nice, smooth, explanation. Thank you.
Amazing how a simple setup can sound so good.
That was the best, first instrument lesson of my life. I felt capable and at ease. Thanks, Let's Do This!
Thanks...very helpful indeed. I've had my LP's for twenty years and play around, but you have inspired me to do more!
We love that you did this on a rooftop!

Well... he did the start and end on roof top. You can see grass in the rest of it so the explanation was somewhere else.

This was very helpful, purchasing my first set tomorrow to keep me busy during the quarantine! Actually looking forward to learning the instrument :)
Best-sounding, most clearly presented instruction I've found here for playing the basic 'Habanera' pattern on bongos for beginners. Unlike many teachers,, this drummer plays with a clean, slinky, fluid style, rather than with a wooden feel and muddy or imprecise tones. And his bongos are tuned nicely. Kudos, Al Dworsky! I have played congas at an intermediate-advanced level intermittently for 15 years, and I have now found a tasty "in" to approaching bongos, which I need to do both for their portability, and to use them 'non-traditionally' or folklorically for accompanying kirtan groups and various improvisational settings. ⚡ Many thanks 🔴⚫🎱
Great setting. Love the rooftop vibe.

what I love about this is how you take it step by step. nice teaching for a real beginner like me!
Good Stuff! Clear and concise. Short enough to learn the basic method so its not easily forgotten and can be practiced anywhere. Bravo! 👏
Reading some of the comments here from a month or two ago, you'd think this guy is some sort of bongo anti-christ because he doesn't play EXACTLY according to the basic bongo patterns. So?!? Plays very well and I incorporated some of what he does into my repertoire, good video, by comparison I make him sound very traditional...
Got it now, thank you! I appreciate you making this for us.
Thank you for this wonderful video and lesson - so easy to understand as I just bought my first second hand bongos ... and want to learn!
Surprisingly easier than I thought it was going to be. Thank you!
Brilliant, very musical, accessible and above all , inspirational. ‘Groove is in the heart’ 😂 Many thanks.
It makes me so glad to see an emphasis on the pulse right from the beginning because I overlooked it as a beginner and very much regretted it.
Very soothing voice and video

Excellent demo/ lesson! Thank you so much 🌠🌅🌌🕊👍🏻
I’m a life long musician. With injuries from an accident I’m finding hand percussion my only unaffected ability. So, buying new percussion ( hand types). Torn between a cajon or bongos. I do music therapy as well, so bongos and other hand percussion seems more accessible. This video, explains what I’ve been know to do, but with appropriate info to do it better, thank you.
Helped me a lot, thanks man!
