How to Play 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On' - 1950s Rock 'n' Roll Guitar Tutorial - Jez Quayle
Музыка
In this tutorial I teach how to play Jerry Lee Lewis's classic rock 'n' roll song, ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’, in the key of A (written by David Williams and Sonny David).
A song sheet containing the lyrics and chords can be viewed or downloaded from my songbook blog here:

In this tutorial I refer to some of the guitar techniques I teach in my Tutorial #1, which can be viewed here: • Tutorial #1 - Acoustic...
...and in my Tutorial #2, which can be viewed here: • Tutorial #2 - Chuck Be...
A video of my complete, acoustic guitar version of this song (recorded in 2016) can be viewed here: • Whole Lotta Shakin' Go...
A video of me playing this song live with my band 'The Fast Rattlers' (in 2017) can be viewed here: • Whole Lotta Shakin' Go...
I vary the way I play this song from time to time (throwing in different boogie riffs in places), so the these versions differ slightly from the version I teach in this video. These extra riffs are taught in my Tutorial #3: • Tutorial #3 - Rockabil...

Yep, it’s a lovely guitar. I don’t have this one anymore though. I found its size, combined with my preferred playing position we’re giving me shoulder pains (I play and perform a lot). So I’ve switched to playing the smaller Gibson L-00. I now have two, and I love’em.

Thanks! I'm glad you're finding my videos useful. I'll be 55 years old in a few days. I've been listening to 1950s rock 'n' roll all my life and playing it for over 40 years. I like to read everything I can find about the artists who made this music too. I've been lucky enough to have seen many of the greatest rockers perform live: Chuck Berry (3 times), Little Richard (2 times), Carl Perkins, The Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley, The Crickets, Fats Domino, and a few lesser-known rockabilly artists. It's good to know there are people like you who appreciate this music in the Czech Republic too. Was early rock and roll difficult to buy or get to hear when Czechoslovakia was part of the Eastern Bloc?

@@RocknRollSongbook I envy you. We had been communists for a long time, but at least Elvis was sneaking up on us on tape, so at least we could listen to him. I wish you success in the next video and have fun.
Jez. Thanks for the quick response. I had to laugh about the songbook being 'metaphorical' and I'm clearly showing my age, as I thought it was a hard copy publication. Thanks also for the link to the songbook; you really ought to get it published - I'm sure it would be a best seller as no one comes close to teaching the way that you do, and all the old sheet music does not contain the level of detail that you include. You make it all sound so great on an acoustic. And playable too. I share your love of these terrific 1950s numbers. Mind you, I envy your control in being able to play only two strings at will with no mistakes. Thank you!!

I'm a Leeds 'Loiner', but I've lived in Sandal for the last 35 years - so I'm close to being accepted as a local! You must know my watering holes - 3 Houses, Star, Harry's Bar. Are you still in W Yorks, and will you be gigging when the lockdown is lifted?

I lived in Leeds for seven years before moving to just north of Bradford in 2019. So yes, I'm still in West Yorkshire. I grew up in Sheffield, but moved south with my family when I was fourteen. I'm not much of a pub-goer these days, so I never went in those watering holes, although I recognise the names. The only time I find myself in pubs nowadays is when I'm gigging. I may well be gigging again when the lockdown is lifted.

Hi John. 'Rock 'n' Roll Songbook' is the name of my KZread channel. It's a metaphorical 'songbook' in the same way as artists like Paul Simon and Rod Stewart have released audio albums entitled 'songbook'. I don't have a print edition of my Rock 'n' Roll Songbook available at the moment. However, you will find song sheets for most (possibly all) of the songs I've uploaded onto this channel, which you can view or download from songbook blog for free. Here's a link: jezquaylesongbook.home.blog/guitar-songs/ You'll find my transcriptions of all sorts of songs there (not only rock 'n' roll).
What effects am I hearing?

A little rockabilly-style, slap-back echo. You can hear it on lots of 1950s rock 'n' roll records.

If you're playing this with plain open chords then you could strum like this: DU DU DU DU (hitting the strings a little harder on beats 2 and 4 in the bar).
