I hadn't considered any need for a metronome. I've been involved in music for years in choirs, as a soloist, playing other instruments, etc. I always kinda knew the speed a piece is requiring. But NOW that I'm preparing to make a commitment to learning the violin, I'm starting to realize how a metronome could help me improve my playing with this little 'discipline box' Hahahahah! I love it and will invest in one. Thank you Allison.

Hi Alison, thank you for this video! I just got a wind-up metronome like yours, and this really helps guide me toward using the metronome with practicing. I’m still working on keeping the bow straight and making sure that I don’t hit two strings at once, and your course is definitely great for the necessary exercises!

Third type and typically comes with an electric violin is yet another digital type. You can also use them to help tune both acoustic and electric violins. Additional note: Glarry Instruments also makes a violin that is both acoustic and electric.

That digital metronome is absolutely available at Amazon ; Wittner MT50. Had all my students buy it for years!

Hey Alison, very useful video. I also liked your antique wooden metronome. They make really nice decor pieces. In regards to the correct tempo for a piece, would this normally be marked on the sheet music?

It is, but that will be the 'finished' tempo. Im referring in this video, so practising with a metronome - in which case you set your own practise speed.

I'm glad I watched this to the end, because what you said there about phone app metronomes making you overthink it by structuring the beat into measures, asking you to fit a piece of music in with the metronome's structured beat, was a bit of a revelation to me. I immediately turned off that feature on my tuner/metronome app (which it turns out can also do a simple beat), and now (after studying the violin for 4 years) I realize that I CAN actually practice with a metronome and that it's really helpful - something that had always seemed too distracting and laborious to me. Thank you so much for that insight!

Yes exactly! As I was recording and talking it suddenly occurred to me to mention is as I know its very confusion and absolutely not necessary at all. I think they confuse everyone for no reason.

I was initially wondering why you weren’t mentioning apps when discussing metronome types, but then at the end I understood why. However, many of these tuner/metronome apps probably can be set to just giving you a simple beat, and it saves people from having to buy a separate device. Thank you again for this video!

I’ve been trying to get someone to make an electroshock metronome, because I don’t follow a click or a light precisely enough. I’m thinking that a couple of electrodes in a strategic location might get through to me.

keeping to the beat of the number with a metronome is already a accomplishment for some students and then there are the tiger students who are playing the number in different styles and vibrato while i was in class trying to find the freaking page we were on looking at the teacher like - bro this isn't even in here /:( xD

This video was no help at all. You said you put the metro at 72. Why? Because you could play that tempo? That means nothing. What does the music say? What does the markings on the music say? My music says: II movement is quarter note = 144. Do I set the metro at 144? What about an eight note, or a whole note in my music? The next section a quarter note = 69. The other piece has a whole note = 30. So what would a measure of 8th notes equal? If the tempo is 2/4? Thankfully I play in an orchestra with a stand partner who can figure this out, so she sets the tempo for me, but I'd rather figure out how to do it myself. I do not have the option of picking the tempo my self, as you did in this video.

The point to playing at a slow speed to learn a piece first and be able to get the rhythm correct. Then you work at getting up to the written tempo.

And 2/4 isn't a tempo, but a time signature. The two things are giving you different info.
