    In Slovenia we take the 6 lowest out. But im glad people outside are starting to learn how to play tarok / tarocchi. In Austria there is a special game where you can call the XVIII a trump, it gains 5 points once played but the game is lost unless you get it through in a specific turn. If you can get an West Austrian explain to you exactly how to play the XVIII, it would be grand, because honestly I dont know fully myself. But we do play it slightly differently to the French version. Mostly the former Austrian empire rules are compatible, we just each add a few extra games to it. Also we deal 2 bundles of 3 on each passing and the frist 6 must go in one go onto the table. The one who called the game gets to pick and change a few from the bundle.

    I think, when the Fool has been played by you, and you didn't win - you must give other player a card from your pile, usually trying it to be of the least value. If you don't have a pile, then winner of the trick receives +1 point, and you get -1 point from your Fool. Then, in the end of the game your Fool costs 4 points.

    @@galesal1109 While most of the Italian games were (and still are) played with a full pack of 78 cards, there are many that are played with a reduced pack - not just in Italy but throughout much of central Europe where most tarot games are now played with just 54 cards. Games with reduced packs are common in Europe, and not just tarot - games played with regular playing cards are often reduced to around 32 cards. There can be various reasons for this - some down to the effect on game play but also economic (fewer cards means a lower cost). In tarot games, the effect of reducing the number of pip cards alters the balance between the trumps and regular suits, making the play of trumps more important - in games were 40 or 42 cards are used, there are clever bidding systems to help players calculate who is holding the important trumps, making for a very different style of play and strategy.

    Hi I have a question about the fool card, if everyone plays a minor card, for example the wands for the round, and you place the fool card to finish the round would the highest minor card still win because the fool can't finish the round? Or does it have to be a Trump card to beat the fool?

  • @earnestbunbury4437

    @earnestbunbury4437

    5 жыл бұрын

    In the Italian and French games, The Fool is an excuse - you play it instead of a card you would otherwise be required to play - so yes, as it has no rank, in your example the highest minor card played would still win. That said, in the Italian games, The Fool is not always lost - whoever played it takes it back and places it next to them face up. When all the cards have been played, whoever holds The Fool must give the player who one the trick another card from their trick pile in exchange - if they didn't win any tricks though, then they must surrender The Fool after all.

  • @noelrobertson4968

    Wait a minute. So what if someone played the king of wands in the first round? Would the trump card still win? 🤔

  • @denisselara9324
    @denisselara93245 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the video. Questions: 1. A player must play a pip card if they have the ability to do so, or can they play a trump if they want? 2. If three players don't have pip cards, but the last one does, does that player have to play a pip, even though everyone else played a trump? 3. The next player plays a trump following another trump if they don't have a card of the same suite as the first played pip and higher. Now lets say that one player doesn't have a card of the suite, but she also doesn't have a trump card higher than the one played by the previous player. What happens then? The round ends and the player who played the highest card wins the trick?

    Hi, playing to a trick in tarot games tends to follow the same rules: The player leading to the trick (ie, who plays the first card) may lead with any card. Each of the other players in turn must then play a card of the suit led - if they do not have a card of the suit led, then they must, if it was a regular suit, play a trump and if they have no cards of the suit led nor any trumps, then they may play any other card from their hand, though it will not win, whatever its rank. If any trumps were played to the trick, then the highest trump played wins it, if no trumps were played, then the highest card of the suit led wins. Players are allowed to lead trumps to a trick, in which case, the rules of play are the same. Each player in turn must, if they have any, play a trump to the trick - if they do not, only then may they play another card, though it will not win. Some games, in the particular those of France, have an over-trump rule. This means that if you are playing a trump to a trick where other trumps have already been played, then you must, if you can, play a higher trump than the highest already played - if you don't have a higher trump, then you can play a lower one. To my knowledge, this is only found in France. The role of The Fool varies between games. In Italy, France, and parts of Switzerland, it maintains its traditional role as a kind of wild card, best thought of as an excuse. In the rest of Europe, The Fool is largely played as the highest ranking trump and is played according to those rules. When used as an excuse, The Fool may be played at any time instead of a card the rules would otherwise require - so if you were down to your last trump but have no cards of the suit led and there are no cards played to it worth winning, then you can avoid wasting the trump by playing The Fool. The Fool is not lost however, instead, whoever played it takes it back and places face up next to them. When all the cards have been played, they must give the player who won the trick another card from their trick pile in exchange for keeping The Fool - though if they did not win any cards to give, then they must surrender The Fool after all. Hope that helps.

An alternative that you might like is sold by them as the Ancient Italian Tarot - which I prefer to this one and is also very suitable for game play. However, I recommend the modern Tarocco Piemontese, which has doubled ended cards and so much easier for game play. I would further recommend the one sold by Mondiano, which I find to be the most durable.

    What is the purpose of removing 1-5 of swords and 5-10 of coins? Why not just 1-5 of all 4 suits?

    because of "reasons", the round suits of coins and cups rank one-high to ten-low - so even though it might make sense to remove the same numbers, they remove the "lowest ranks". This is the case still in Austria - where only the 7-10 of spades and clubs, and the Ace-4 of hearts and diamonds are used.

    Not quite. I could just buy any old tarot deck but if it's a deck designed more for divination then they won't be reversable/bidirectional, not even the pips, which can be fine for solitaire games not so much for multiplayer games. Also the texture and feel of decks meant for playing is different from those designed for divination. I've *seen* examples of playing decks but cant find them to actually buy.

    According to another comment you have to play a pip card of a different suit, sacrificing it as a card that will never win. Same goes if you have a card of the right suit, but a lower number; you have to play it and miss the trick.

    It’s terribly sad how people use tarot cards for bullshit “Fortune Telling” when they were meant for a game

    Fortune telling can also be ment as a game before someone takes it seriously. Giving the cards special meanings creates many new rules and relationships with cards, which can be also very interesting and funny. When the next card gives the context to the previous card, the card setting, the succession of the cards is in fortune telling also a bit tricky. Anyway, the meaning of the cards is as old as the cards themselves, so it is not modern by any means

    I think it’s awesome how we humans use anything and everything to predict our future. Fortune telling has been practiced for millennia

    Fortune tellers use coins, dice, dominoes, and so many other things that is created for different purpose. The sad thing is that tarot decks became more popular in fortunetelling than card-games. The good thing is that tarot cards is one of the most, if not the most popular fortunetelling medium.

    I don't think it's sad that it's used for fortune telling, rather it's sad that people are scared of tarot cards because they only know it as occult and scary witchcraft. Same problem with the satanic panic over Dungeons and Dragons.
