"Silent Night" (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in 2011.[1] The song has been recorded by a large number of singers from every music genre. The version sung by Bing Crosby is the third best-selling single of all-time.

When I was in second grade, many, many years ago, we had recorder as a required course. I could make the sounds, I could play by ear, but put a piece of music in front of me and I was looking at something as foreign as ancient Latin to students of today. I could not understand it. The day came for our exam. We were given a piece of music, no title on it, and told what area of the school we could go to and practice. It was a small Christian one-room school in the basement of the church. I got the broom closet. I sat in there and looked and got more and more frightened. I could not read the music. I could not play for my 'final'. The teacher came to listen to me...I could not do it! I loved playing on the recorder by ear. It was amazing to me...But I failed the test...I could not make the notes into anything I knew. I think it was some simple chorus that most are familiar with like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, but I flunked. Some 50 plus years later, I still love the recorder. I still love music...and I can pick out the notes a little better, but not well enough to play for anyone...I want that to change! I want to be able to know note placement and to read them fluently. I want to put the musical instruments I have collected through the years to PROPER use! This is my gift to me this coming year, take time to play, practice, enjoy. Thanks for the start today, December 1, 2018. Blessings!

Thanks for your lovely comment! I wish you good luck:) i struggle to read music too! All i can remember usually is the middle line in the treble clef is B and the middle in the bass is D :p takes me ages to learn a new piece properly so I usually cheat and play by ear... rhythm is my other weakness! God bless!

@@KerinGedge Oh, rhythm!!! If I do not know a piece, it's hard for me to know the pace of it. Sometimes even when I do know it. And understanding and getting the timing of the whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes...music is a foreign language I WANT to understand and apply. Thanks for your help with it, even if you are only a little ahead of us. I do not have a metronome - probably something I should invest in...and a tuner...I have lost some of my hearing, though if it is loud enough I can hear it...Blessings!

@@KerinGedge in phrase 3 you are showing the note A by covering the first 2 holes. However, when showing the phrase faster you are covering only the 1st hole, thus showing the note B. It's just a graphic mistake, the sound is unaffected. Thanks for the video, it was great for a beginner like me.
