How to play reggae rhythm guitar - for beginners

How to play reggae rhythm guitar for brginners.
This lesson looks at three different strumming techniques that you should know.
These reggae guitar rhythm strumming style will help develop a very good repertoire and they are indespensable when playing live.
I played in the key of E minor, A minor and B minor. I should have gone to C major couple places but did not.
The first technique in the these three reggae rhythm guitar strumming style involve just simply strumming down and trying not to make the strings ring out.
The second guitar rhythm strumming technique involves strumming down and up quickly. Do note that I press the strings down on the down strum and release them on the up stroke.
Third reggae rhythm strumming technique involves resting your hand lightly on the strings to mute them and then strumming up and down.
I did use a reggae wah pedal for the last example and I have also posted a picture of the position of the wah.
I created the reggae riddim so if you are interested in it, please feel free to contact me about it.

I was introduced to reggae in the early 1970's. Luckily it came to me much like putting shoe on. I play mainly roots reggae. It has been my love since the '70's.

Great insights! Especially the part of playing on the upper three strings so as to not muddy things up with the mid frequencies being played by the keyboards. I wish more musicians would understand the role of their instrument in a song and the range of frequencies that they should be targeting.

@@playreggaeguide Thanks brother! It's easy to forget to check back for a reply! Anyway, I like to find songs and try to play along but my ears aren't developed enough to pick out the chords so I'm usually not playing them right. Common sense tells me I should just keep trying until it sounds right. Any other suggestions or tips for making this process easier? I like those AHA! moments. BE SAFE!!!

Great tutorial. As a reggae keyboardist who also plays guitar, this is the best tutorial I’ve seen on KZread. As a keyboardist, I look forward to playing with a guitarist with this tone. It makes the bubble sounds great and I don’t have to move up an octave to sound like reggae on the piano hand.

I'd seen a few videos advocating double press of the strings on the double chuck which I cannot do and have always done it like this video press on the downstroke and release on the upstroke. I was starting to think I wasn't authentic but this reaffirms my style. BTW I play guitar in a tribute band and have a fb page called Reggae Guitar. Have a look, see what you think.

So they do fret it incompletely, not touching the fret at all, and it doesn't matter if it's not as precise an intonation as if it was completely fretted. And the wah can be stuck in that position?

I dont understand yet after many tries and recordings to dampen the string after the chop. You allways hear a sound after it from individual strings... i dont understand how to immediately mute all strings.

  • @whymonkeymusic

    @whymonkeymusic

    5 жыл бұрын

You must release the pressure that's pressing the strings to the fretboard, it may take some practice. If you are sure your fingers are already muting the strings and yet you hear a ringing it could be that your guitar's neck is bent or something and you could 1) take it to a store and have it check it out 2) try to fix it with the truss rod, but this is highly technical work so I wouldn't recommend it
