I wouldn't be surprised if Philip Glass has had a peanut butter and jam sandwich every day for the past 75 years. Sometimes with crust, sometimes without; sometimes on white, sometimes on whole wheat; sometimes with blueberry jam, sometimes with crunchy peanut butter, but always indisputably peanut butter and jam

What I find fascinating about Philip Glass's stuff (or at least some of it) is that he uses repetition to build up continuous, very stable rhythms, then makes a switch at exactly right moment, which pulls the rug from under the listener, and derails his senses. It's a really freaky effect. It's wonderful. Especially prominent in the Mishima soundtrack.

Great thoughts, but I think you missed the polyrhythmic aspects of his music. You really don't get the full picture without that. Otherwise you're pretty spot on.

What I love most about your instructional videos, Torley, is the way you describe and show the way the music is played. It's not just a handful of phrases, you point out the way a song is fundamentally, and it invites anyone trying to learn off your videos to find the fundamentals in any music or musician they love for themselves. It might seem like the simplest way someone learns, but there's something extremely inviting, and inspiring, about a teacher who shows you how to learn for yourself.

He loves arpeggios. He comes from the french minimalism style of music, and was heavily inspired by erik satie. While it may not be the most musically complex music in the world, it's played in such a mode that inspires emotion and nostalgia. He marketed a style of music that deserves more attention.

Well, the problem here is that while it's easy to identify the component parts, almost none of the "variations" that Torley comes up with actually sound like Glass because there's a fundamental misunderstanding of the function of the elements. It's not just a four chord cadence with a duplet or a triplet making up those parts. Literally none of the stuff Torley comes up with sounds like Philip Glass which is why all Glass's imitators can't get at the essence. Glass's music is comprised of totally arbitrary yet personal rules which he rarely breaks. Torley grasps only a cursory understanding of this. "Of course he gets into all sorts of fancy time signatures." How that can be uttered with no emphasis on that, when that is the basis of the music seems to me wildly irresponsible. The same sort of disregard for the structures which are created which underpin the music is like talking about Bruckner's music in the same sort of poor-man's vocabulary would be laughed at. Improve at the end being "like Philip Glass" is so totally unlike Philip Glass, and would never be mistaken for actual Philip Glass demonstrates the point.

+R. S. Guérin I will grant you that his improvisation at the end starts somewhat similar to Philip Glass and than goes astray. But to be very honest, his explanation is very concise and of course Philip Glass is a genius and you can clearly spot the differences. But this is very well worth it as a piece of entertainment and maybe even as a learning piece.

You utterly miss the entire point of his compositions: subtlety. Which, quite obviously, you do not possess. Creating ambiance, mood, and emotion while modulating on a common theme are some of Glass' strong points. You're mock interpretations do no justice. Glass even states himself his compositions are based around repetition of short patterns with modulation, so in pointing that out as a critique of Glass only makes you look like an uninformed fool.

+Noah Whitney Dude. He's trying to cram as much information as possible into a short video for people to watch for free on their cell phone. This is not a university level music course. You don't watch a cooking video on KZread and complain that they don't remind you not to cut your finger off, do you? No. You know to keep those things in mind on your own.

Joseph Costlow I took the tone of the video to be much different than you describe it. It felt as if he was putting Glass down and describing his music as "inferior" and "all you have to do to sound like glass is do this simple stupid stuff!" If I misinterpreted the intention of this video then I whole heartedly apologize. As a musician and huge fan of the complexity and meaning woven into Glass' compositions I know for a fact that capturing the essence of Glass takes more than described in the video. Thanks for your reply though.
