How To Play "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran (Beginner Piano Tutorial)

Ed Sheeran wrote "Perfect" for his wife -- who he actually grew up and went to school with!
The lyrics are so beautiful, coupled with a lovely melody. The good news for us is that the chords in this song are very simple -- and there are only four of them!
We're in the key of G, so the chords we will be using are G, Em, C, and D. That's it! The order changes in the chorus, but they are the exact same chords. We have done many videos on how so many popular songs use the same four chords, and this is a "Perfect" example (excuse the pun). This song uses the 1-6-5-4 progression for the verse and pre-chorus - and the 6-4-1-5 progression for the chorus.
The most challenging thing about this song is the left hand. We'll be playing the chords as broken arpeggios, but if that is challenging there is a simpler option which I have timecoded below. Another challenge is that sometimes our right and left hands will be 'sharing' notes. They'll be playing the same note -- but at different times. I have also timecoded solutions for this below.
⚡️Chapters:
0:59 The important left-hand part
1:35 Adding the right hand
2:25 Putting both hands together
3:10 The pre-chorus
4:16 The chorus - same chords, different order
6:05 How to deal with overlapping hands
6:16 A simpler option for the left hand
6:53 The final section - the outro riff

The left-hand notes are arpeggios of the chords. So for a G chord the notes are G-B-D-G-D-B up and down. And then it's the same for ever chord

I don't get the shell of chords. Could you explain a little better please?

  • @tfmarketing12

    @tfmarketing12

    Жыл бұрын

@Olamide Ogunwale Shells of Chords: You just do the "outside" keys of a triad, to make it simpler. Like for example C-major triad would normally be C-E-F, but you can just do C-F to simplify it. Same with G-major triad which would use 3 fingers to play G-B-D at the same time... but you can just do G-D (skipping the middle key B). In that sense you're just doing the "shell" of the triad, skipping the middle key/note and just playing the "outer" notes of the triad instead. If you look at the way Lisa hits the keys from 6:16 to 6:49 you'll see she just hits the outer notes of the triad/chord during that section (instead of the 3 notes in the chord she was doing before), and it still sounds good. So it's a good way for beginners to simplify things. Hope that helps.

I used to use the channel HDpiano which really sucked bcs the only thing they wanted was for you to go to they’re site and pay like ten bucks a week for a subscription for some dude talking his way through the song. This is so much better and I can actually learn stuff. Thank you

"The most challenging thing" ... is to get both hands working together... it will take me a year omg, BUT you are a fantastic lady and I enjoy how all seems to be easy (even if it stays a dream for me).

Since I have a mental block regarding sight reading the bass staff I find lead sheets great because I can pick out notes from the chords. Thank you!

Thanks Lisa! I learnt piano as a child and although I love music, I just couldn't relate to what was being taught. But your amazingly simple teaching style allowed me to master this song in 2 hours. Have been playing this everyday for the last week. Keep up the good work!
