Calling halflings by a trademarked name? I tried to stop doing that, but it turns out it's a difficult hobbit to kick. Probably because of their size bonus to AC.

You know, people knock humans as a race choice because they're "boring", but honestly, some of the most interesting and memorable characters I've encountered in RPGs have been human. One piece of advice I would give is: don't rely on race to make your character interesting. Bring him/her to life with an interesting personality. I always say that a human paladin from Cormyr can be just as interesting as a half-drow half-dragon spawn of a demon prince paladin with the right personality.

+burningdragon91 Technically all three examples I listed are actually just orcs. The concept of orcs being able to breed with humans at all is almost exclusively a pathfinder and D&D thing which makes finding examples of true half-orcs in other media very difficult. Pathfinder orcs are portrayed more like barely sentient savages, while half-orcs are portrayed more like cunning primal warriors. Orcs in the settings I mentioned are closer to the later portrayal.

What? Guys, they were talking about Halflings at the time and likened them to Tolkien's Hobbits. "Potatoes" alluded to vodka as well as (listen to Amy's inflection when she says "potatoes") referenced a very well-known autotune music video of Sam (a hobbit) saying "potatoes" to Gollum. Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew.

this my first video of yours I have seen. the other comments really covered my biggest concern of the jokes. I do want to point out I love the interactive idea and that you had a different makeup for each race I feel like that's really intervate of and even though I've been playing Pathfinder since it came out and this is extremely basic information I look forward to seeing the rest of the videos on it and exploring your additional content. good luck
'Famous halflings includes... Hobbits.' Great video, can't wait to see the others. #GartokIsTheBest
Ivan, I want to know where you got your name. This could sound insulting, but it really, really isn't meant to be. I've just met a bunch of people in the US who spell their name Jacques but pronounce it Jock-quez because of this football player. I notice you pronounce your name Eye-van where a Russian, for example, would say Eee-von.
HALF ORCS ARE GREAT! Nothing better than an academic half-orc wizard. due to lack of racial penalties it is easy to play a half-orc that subverts the orcish racial stereotyping. personally I like to play mine (Volkwin Jung) as a member of the intelligentsia, a professor who merely wishes to learn, but goes out into the world to discover hidden artifacts like Indiana Jones. he has a Compsognathus as a sidekick/familiar. (Which gives him +4 Initiative) he is specialized in the elemental school of fire. but has the elemental magic feat that lets him turn any elemental spell into cold. (by casting it at a higher level) in case he runs into something that is immune to fire. (like a magma elemental or something). that's good since water spells take two spell slots, (since it is an apposed school) but by casting a fire-spell as cold he avoids a penalty. I traded out Ferocity for Bestial. which gives me +2 Perception, and I traded Intimidation for Scavenger which gives +2 perception and appraise, instead of +2 Intimidation. (Volkwin is a gentlemen and a scholar, and he will not use base threats to get his way. he has 7 in diplomacy and 1 in intimidation). Due to taking the fire school I have a 10 point resistance to fire. (that will eventually evolve into outright immunity) and can cast Fire Jet as a standard action 7 times a day. And all that is not even getting INTO the spells he knows. this is a level 1 character. Half Orcs are awesome.

Hey there. I know this is an old video, but I would hope you folks are still open to some feedback. My girlfriend is getting ready to join a Pathfinder group recently (we've been playing a lot of 5e and 4e) and needed a place to start, and I was recommended your videos as a good primer. I have to say, reshooting this one might be something to think about. She, and many others in our groups, primarily play Human characters largely because of the bonus feat (she does the same in 5e with the Variant Human) and ability boosts. The low-key condescension made her ask if all Pathfinder groups were like this, and even reconsidered playing because of the way that part was presented. I understand the idea - it's fantasy so BE fantastical. Yet, when you're educating others this came across as condescending and patronizing. Especially the way Ben was treated in the beginning. The information was mostly spot on, but your personal opinions on character choices should not be so front and center. It really detracted from us finishing the series. Intent is one thing to consider, but audience perception is another. You folks put a LOT of time and energy into this and it shows, as the production is very good, but the jokes and tone were ultimately unnerving.
I'm thinking of starting a Pathfinder group for my non-DnD friends, and this series will be great to introduce them to RPG gaming. Thanks for a great series!

I am interested in buying this bundle at 25$, but nowhere does it say how much will the shipping cost. I live in Israel, pretty far off from the US :) - Humble Bundle says "shipping price not included". When I try to go to the checkout, after choosing 25$ - it moves me to the PAY NOW section. Meaning I will pay for the box first, then I will see the shipping cost.... Is there no way to get the total price before making the deal?EDIT: I've also noticed that the store says the beginner's box is "extinguished" and buyers will only receive it in june or july. So basically they may charge me however they want for it - I really need to learn the price and hear from others if the package is worth it! Thanks

Customers who purchase this tier will have their Beginner Box orders fulfilled in June or July, when the new shipment of Beginner Boxes arrives from the printer. 2) You can see an estimated shipping cost via this link support.humblebundle.com/hc/en-us/articles/216821347#shipping Hope that helps you. +Saving Throw heya! Thanks for the ridiculously quick reply! Truly appreciate it, it's been helpful. I might need to sift through your videos about Pathfinder first before making a decision. might end up paying 15$ or less and then if I like the system - buy hardcopy manuals from Book Depository or something. I am totally unfamiliar with PF. I'm a seasoned DND player, played mostly 3-3.5e and recently tried 5e. I found that I prefer 3.5 more for its depth and complixity and the refined rules. How would you describe PF in a nutshell? How does it compares with DND? Would a DND player feel at home there? I have noticed that it is d20 and even the cover art seems highly similar to DND so I was wondering if it's some odd iteration of it Thanks in advance.
@Savingthrowshow

+Noy Amos Briga If you're familiar with 3.5 you'll be right at home with PF. It's a spiritual successor and the rules are nearly identical. Many devs from Wizards went to work on Pathfinder when 3.5 went the way of the dodo to make room for 4e. Anyway, you should feel right at home!

I don't think a single player in my current Pathfinder game is playing as a race from the core rule book. I'm playing a Trox Brawler, and the others are a Drow, a Tiefling, a Kitsune, a goddamn talking cat (our fighter) and some sort of weird rock hound meant to resemble Zuul from Ghost Busters. We're pretty badass all-things considered

Argentspear Pathfinder actually has a lot of supplemental content to help you out in this area. Check out the Advanced Race Guide for some of the standard fare, including Ratfolk. Also Kobold Press has some supplements on creating Centaur PCs. There are other systems that let you be just about anything, it's just a matter of whether you need cold, hard stats to fit them in to your campaign/setting or if you've got a looser game in mind.
Holy Cow Ivan! Do you do anything other than show up in KZread videos all day long?

Hi Eduardo! You actually can play as a full-blown orc in Pathfinder, it's just not in the core rulebook which is all we covered in this series. Pick up a copy of the Advanced Race Guide for details here amzn.to/2im7EBV or www.d20pfsrd.com/races/other-races/featured-races/arg-orc
"Awww, I have no friends."
Actually, in all seriousness, humans are sort of an endangered PC species. Pretty much everyone I game with will pick elves, half-elves, gnomes, or halflings, with the occasional dwarf or half-orc thrown in (Aside from when they hit me up to play something out of the Advanced Race Guid (ARG!!!)). The characters have a tendency to try and be interesting only BECAUSE of their non-human race a lot of the time, rather than be intersting, AND be a member of a cool race. I'm routinely the only human in the party.
Gnome. I choose the gnome.
Ben: Eww! I have no friends. If dat ain't me
For as much as this is cheese, this still somewhat funny

I loved the video. I happen to enjoy that style of humor though there was a couple of cringes in there. Always a danger with that style. The bias... (O_O)
It is a funny video and enjoyable to watch but definitely directed towards complete beginners. Even then I think you should at least mention some of the points I'm gonna make here -> introduced them but let them know there is more. -Core Races are enormously unbalanced in that Humans are straight up best in 9/10 cases. This comes down to having a flexible attribute modifier, an extra feat (which is on it's own significantly better then most other racial features) and argueably the best favoured class boni for the majority of classes. Unless you want to be a very specific kind of character human will be the best choice (even in that specific case human will probably be on par). I personally don't like playing humans in Pathfinder but it's sadly true that Paizo has a hard-on for them. Weakest races are probably Half Elfs and Half Orcs (although Half Elfs have some great favoured class boni like humans) -There are way more playable races than only those 7. You could at least mention that. I understand you want to introduce beginners to those 7 first but an additional line would have been great I think (like "There are only 7 races in core. More can be found in supplements but for the sake of this video we would like to introduce the ones you'll likely play first to you." or something like that). PS: This includes Goblins as one previous Poster was asking for them (in UP you can even find intelligent Blue Goblins although that is 3rd Party (albeit legitimate 3rd Party)). -You could mention that Pathfinder is based on D&D 3.5. Not really necessary to do that but nonetheless true. Anyways these are just the things that are bugging me. Keep doing your thing
