RULES:
The object of this 2 player game is to have the majority of your colored disks face up on the board at the end of the game. Setup. Layout the board and place 4 disks, 2 white side up and 2 black side up in the center of the board as shown. Give each player 30 disks. 1 player plays as white and the other as black. The player playing black goes first, then turns alternate.
On your turn you must place 1 disk on any empty space on the board and outflank your opponent. To outflank, means to have your disks on either side of a continuous straight line of your opponent’s disks. This line can be any number of disks long and can horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. When you place a disk so that you have outflanked your opponent’s disks, you then flip the outflanked disks over to your color. You are allowed to outflank multiple lines in a single turn.
If you are unable to outflank your opponent on your turn, then you are not allowed to play and you must skip your turn. If you can play, then you must play. Disks may only be outflanked as a direct result of a move and must be in a direct line of the placed disk. In this example these 2 white disks are not flipped. An outflank may not skip over your own colored disk to outflank more disks. Only the disks in the immediate outflank are captured.
All outflanked disks must be flipped. You may not chose to only flip some of them. If you flip over the wrong disk, and your opponent hasn’t moved yet, you may fix the error. If your opponent has already moved, then you may not fix the error. Once a disk is placed on a square it may never be removed or moved to another square. If you run out of disks to place, and you still have a legal move, then your opponent must give you some of theirs to use. When it is no longer possible for either player to move, the game is over. Disks are counted and the player with the majority of their color showing is the winner.
You can also play multiple rounds and track points. The winner of the round receives points equal to the difference between the number of their opponent’s disks, subtracted from the number of their disks. Once players reach a predetermined point total, the game ends and the player with the most points is the winner.
There is an advantage to going first. For less experienced players to play with more experienced players, the less experienced player can go first. If you need a greater handicap, then the less experienced player may start the game with up to 4 disks already in play, one in corner of the board.

this game used to be preinstalled on the tv when I was 6. it made no sense to me back then and seeing the actual rules brought some closure to the memories

I heard a GO player call this the Tic-Tac-Toe of table top games. The more I think it of it, the more of a sick burn it becomes.

I'm playing for the first time and this was an incredibly well done tutorial of the game. A lot of questions I might have had were all answered. Great job.

Glad I could help!
This is the best tutorial - clear, no rapid change of frames, no wasted words - thank you so much! 😊
This is a great instructional video on Othello rules :) Just one point to add on, the top right disc of the starting position should always be black from each players' perspective by tradition :)
After watching your crazy good monopoly vids, i knew i can play this gane again! Thanks
I became addicted to this game playing it online, but I only became interested in the game as a whole because of, well... can anyone think of a *specific game* when I quote this? _"A minute to pick up, a lifetime to perfect!"_
Really well made video, thanks!
Excellent demonstration.
this was so good at explaining how to play. Well done lmao
Thanks. This was on a mini arcade game we bought. I was wondering what it was called.
I love this channel❤️
Thanks for explaining the rules
After watching this video, I want to play and challenge my friends in our community. I'm an average player of Othello and still improving and discovering techniques. I guess my only strategy for any other level players like me is to outsmart and use deception concepts just like what I've realized and learn from Saboteur. Great and Unique game because this is the predecessor of my Tabletop boardgames and Puzzles 😁👍♥️🎲🎱🍩☕😃
Very helpful 🙌🏼
Great explanation of this game thank you
Thanks, this was really well explained!
I never understood this game until you explained the outflanking
Very well explained ✌️
Very well explained. Thank you
We had this on the atari 2600 growing up. good times.
Lost my second online game from a player in Japan. My record stands at 7-3-0. Have only gone up against 2 online players (Both from Japan) this year. Getting back into to it after not playing for about the past 2 years.
thanks a lot brother
Seeing it explained like this makes it so much easier to understand than trying to read the instructions lol
Very good tuturial
Thank you! I had an NES cartridge with Othello on it. The last time I played it was probably when I was seven or eight. It was always against the computer, and I couldn't suss out the rules for myself. Naturally, I lost every time I tried to play, because I didn't even know how to try to win. Can I assume that a player cannot "flank" themselves? For example, if the black player places a piece to flank their opponent horizontally, but this placement results in a shape where the white player's already-placed pieces essentially flank the black pieces vertically, the black player's pieces in that vertical line do not turn white, right? If this assumption is correct, then it seems like a good strategy, filling in gaps so it's impossible for the opponent to flank those pieces on that axis.
Welcome to the World of Othello :) definitely a game that will activate your brain
What happens to if you consume all of the other players discs

@@TroyVan6654 Not true. It can happen rather early in the game. It is called a wipe-out. If you wipe-out your opponent's discs, you win.
Thank you
This is the only version of "reversi" I am familiar with. I was surprised that it was a version of a completely different game.
I'm tempted to make a 4 player version, maybe even a 6 player version of this using dice/cubes instead of discs...
I used to think Othello and Go were the same thing
good teaching
Me: Are you securing the corners? You: The corners? Why? Me: Ahhhh, see, if you take all four corners... Also me: You can flip the script on your opponent!
How about Ratuki
I remember playing this when i was 4 to about 8. My family couldn’t figure it out and would be annoyed when i won all the time. Gave it up because nobody really challenged me to it outside of my family

in fact the player going second has a small advantage, since (if neither side skips a turn) they can have the last move.

It's like Go board game
Why say that each player gets 30 disks at the beginning? That's not really true if each player keeps making moves as long as there are any disks left. Isn't it effectively just a single pool of 60 disks?
Having never heard of this game before, I thought this would have something to do with Shakespeare.
question: Do you get just once chance to outflank you opponent or can you outflank multiple times (in different areas of the board) during your single turn?
@TroyVan6654
2 жыл бұрын
You only place down one disk on one turn. That one disk may outflank multiple lines, as shown at 1:04.
@maryamarfeen5741

If you have a chance to outflank two or more discs then you can
why at 1:52 we can't flip those 2 white pieces?! i thought they're in same line with last 2?!

If you have a phone download OthelloQuest you can play on that.
[Clubhouse Games flashback intensifies]
but, like..... where are the legal spots to place disks? How can you tell where you can and cannot play?
@mischabronstring5893
2 жыл бұрын
A legal spot is a spot where your disc-to-be-placed borders at least one opponent's disc, and behind that disc (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally) there is at some point a dics of your colour again. So, if there is a horizontal line BLACK-WHITE and you play black, you can put it on the right of this. If there is a line BLACK-WHITE-WHITE-WHITE you can also put it to the right of it (and flip all three white discs in one go).
Thank you,😂

I watched this video because I want to play Othello on Nintendo.
The first time I ever played this game, it was the NES version of the game. I lost, obviously.
I knew this game, but it was named "Reversi".

As many opponent disc as there are between your newly placed disc and an existing disc of yourself. In all three (horizontally, vertically and diagonally) directions.
👍
I ordered this game online. If I was playing, I would say white goes first to make it synonymous with chess, so that it makes sense to me.
Isn't this called Reversi?
Also, you can win by flipping every single disc
