I just use a felt-plectrum, because I have freaky long fingernails and if I touch the strings with them it sounds like I'm trying to torture it...

+Katichan Oreo Honesly, I use the tips of all my fingers. Relax your hand so your fingers hang loosely and then strum so you brush the strings with the tips of your fingers :)

You're supposed to use your thumb and second finger but I use my thumb because I find it the easiest way with fingers. I much prefer using a plectrum though

Your jumper looks absolutely fantastic with your eyes!!! It really compliments them !

The plucking pattern is easy. Instead of doing what she did, just use your thumb and drag it down on the notes in the tempo of the song (weird explanation I know but it's the only way I can explain it without using visuals ??) Then just use your thumb, index and middle finger to pluck the last three things like she did.

Honestly I have had such a stressful month and I think looking forward to each veda every day has been the only thing to keep me sane

You forgot step 1: Have any smidgen of musical talent... That musicians are able to multi-task in this way still astounds me; I did piano for a few years, and I could barely make my left and right hand play different things, let alone try to talk/sing at the same time (and once I realised my younger sister, with no piano lessons, was better than me I quit). But this was still fascinating to watch, so thanks for sharing!

Leah Hurst it's good to have goals but i'd say this song would be very hard to play for a beginner. when i started playing i was aiming to play the judge by twenty one pilots and it took me like 8 months to get there. lol you don't even need to listen to me i just thought it might help xx

I played this a few weeks after I got mine, now me and Crystal (My Uke) are happily playing all of Dodie's songs, after almost 1 and a half years :) I would say its easy for a beginner. x

DODIE this song. Is seriously amazing. Thank you so much for making a karaoke version because now I can sing along whenever I want. I also write songs but I only have a guitar right now, and this is forcing me to realize I need to save to buy a ukulele because there's just such a good quality to ukulele songs that you can't get on a guitar. ALSO THANK YOUUU for showing how you mute and chuck bc that has been a mystery to me. Praise. SUCCESS, I just bought a crappy 30 dollar uke just to learn this and other songs by Dodie. And now I have LEARNED IT! Thanks so much for the tutorial! I'm totally with you that I don't learn strumming patterns as much as I just... play them. Although, the timing for muting and unmuting could have been clearer. I figured it out eventually though :) All in all, it took me about 2 hours last night plus a total of 3ish hours today to have it somewhat solid. Now another day of just practicing and I'll have it mastered aaaaaaaa! :D You're such an awesome person Dodie! Hugs from America!!

its been a few years but ive noticed she gravitates towards barre bare chords since she generally incoprorates a lot of muting/chucking which really adds an interesting sound, its what makes so many of her songs more difficult to play. (dodies ability to understand rhythm is mind boggling for me i suck at rhythm)

For everyone wondering how the heck you are meant to strum or do the cords or anything, try learning some simpler songs to get used to strumming and then it will be easier to play this :)

I decided to learn this song first as I got my first ukulele yesterday. I may be finding it easy buuuutttt I HAVE been playing guitar for, what, 6 years now? So the fact I got my ukulele yesterday is kinda negated by that (even though guitar doesn't translate to ukulele as easily as you think it would.... damn C string) :P

I have no actual reason to watch this since I don't know how to play ukulele but I watch it anyway because I just love your videos :3

AestheticMind I'm positive I do it differently, so I'll just tell you how I make it easier. I just place my fingers back on the strings after plucking them instead of muting them with my left hand.

One For The Road is so great (as is basically everything you write/sing) and I love that by trying to learn some of your songs I am getting so much better at ukulele! it's funny how learning to play "Absolutely Smitten" and "Paint" right before this has come in so handy now - for the "remember when we kissed that night" bit and the silent strumming (what's it called again lol) ps: I think you do a really good job at explaining how to play your songs! ☺️☺️
