Yeah this is how we played it too. We used large marbles, they were called jumbo. Bigger ones called jumbo jumbo. The reason I looked this up is I'm naming my cover band Cat Eye Jumbo. I just wanted to see if I could find a video of how we used to play with the hole in the middle. Brings back old memories.

This was how I was taught in school. The only variation was that similar to billiards except instead of shooting your own billard balls in; the focus was getting your opponents marbles in the hole. If you shot another players marble in the hole then you could keep it.

Why cant I find any games with a poison hole. Each player starts off by shooting their marble into or as close to the hole as you can get, person closest gets to move first. Once they land in the hole they're able to attack other players. Meanwhile everyone else tries to shoot for the hole to steal the poison from the current holder. Who ever lands and steals it then becomes the new attacker and it repeats until no one is left but one person. Usually we'd play for keeps unless you were a beginner and many of us had bags of different colored marbles, grandaddy marbles weren't allowed unless everyone agreed or if everyone had steelys. Boulders were allowed as were flat top marbles. Sometimes youd find a match of nothing but grandaddy marbles. Common Cat eyes were trash, except the all around swirled ones and solid swirled ones which were considered egg marbles and rare. Those were the good days :')

we used the same set up but used a shooter to hit smaller marbles into the hole. this version seems a lot easier
