How To Play Just What I Needed By The Cars - Guitar Lesson - Elliot Easton Ric Ocasek

Музыка

In this video I demonstrate how to play the song Just What I Needed by The Cars. The Cars were one of the best classic rock bands from the 70's/80's and produced many memorable hits and catchy tunes. Elliot Easton was a terrific guitarist that wrote perfect solos and parts that accompanied Rig Ocasek's songs perfectly. Sometimes it has been wondered if Elliot played any wrong notes, and this song is a fine example of that statement. In this lesson I not only demonstrate the rhythms parts, I cover the guitar solo in detail as well as how to play the keyboard solos on guitar. I hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe!

Back in the late 70's we played this song in a garage band! My buddy had a blue pedal that did this octave thing, I'd use that for the keyboard part. Once in a while the pedal worked and it sounds pretty good as I recall. I'm, 64...WTF. Love your videos Marty, makes me feel young again!

Thanks for the lesson. A lot of what we hear on the recording is actually Ocasek. Elliot layers his parts overtop of Ricks chugging and clicking. That was a big part of what made the band special was how Elliot, Rick, Greg and Ben would weave their parts together and make it all sound like one. During the Chorus, Elliot is playing lead fills and Ocasek is playing all the chords. I learned the solo by ear back in 1981 and always played it at the 9th fret, but Elliot does not. He plays the same notes obviously, but mostly lower on the neck. His way involves more movement but he tends to do that in many of his solos. This can be seen in various live videos on line. Elliot likes to follow the chord changes with his lead parts, so he will shift positions as the chords change.

Cool observations man! I've never really watched any live videos of them. It makes sense why he'd follow the chord positions. I am mostly an economic player and try to keep things easy. The guitar is cool because you can play the same riff in so many places. 😀🎸
