This is one of the first proper metal solos I ever learned. As you say, it's at a speed that is quite approachable, but still sounds great and iconic once learned, and you can always cut some corners or add some improv here and there while still keeping its identity mostly intact.

You really nailed it on the head when you said it was an approachable solo but then properly highlighted the subtleties and idiosyncrasies of Adrian's style. I call those "Easter Eggs" in his playing. I love playing this solo because it's so iconic. Even though I've played it hundreds of times I still struggle a bit with that hammer on/pull off riff you called out due to how the speed goes from a gallop and has a quick but gradual speed increase. I've never felt I truly mastered that smooth speed increase. But that's part of the fun...the Easter Eggs. Great work as always my friend.

i'd say it's a great solo, as you said, for advanced beginners, as it helps you working on certain very useful techniques and being still "easy" at the same time... tbh i was scared to learn this solo thinking it was too hard when i was stil a beginner, but that quick legato zoom in the original video got me into it... the ifrst solo i learned was purgatory which i found very approachable... by the way, you nailed the guitar tone perfect!!!! also every note too!

There is something I enjoy about knowing that Cobain would have been, at least in a small way, a fan of Iron Maiden! 😊 Maybe it's because I feel it legitimizes both artists to the other's respective fans. 🤷 Whatever it is, it's cool 🤘

It's always very interesting to delve into the intricacies of Mr. Adrian Smith's phrasing. Well done, Nico. This has nothing to do with 'The Trooper,' but in the same year, Adrian composed this song for a Japanese band. One can discern the distinctive elements of his style in it; you truly can't overlook this guy's signature flair. kzread.info/dash/bejne/moeJmsSymZrgisY.html

Although not a guitarist, always great watching you playing all those epic tunes of our favourite band! Just a question about your shirt, as I was planning to buy some of those soccer shirts. Is it slim fit or normal one? Should I go for one size bigger or the one I wear on t-shirts? Thanks in advance. Greetings from Greece!

That actually depends on where you normally buy from. When I buy t-shirts in Italy, I have to get either a Large or XL. In North America, I buy Mediums and the jerseys I buy from WaSport are all mediums. I hope that's helpful!

  • @LicksOfTheBeast

Adding tabs would be an extra step that I just don't have time to include at the moment. This is why I ask for people to subscribe and help the channel grow... But if you feel you *need* tabs to follow my explanations of this solo, do yourself a favour and try your best to NOT use them!! Adrian is playing very simple patterns using mostly E minor pentatonic and a bit of E natural minor so it should be easy to follow along if you have a decent knowledge of your fretboard, a sense of pitch and understanding of intervals. All are absolutely necessary for any guitar player! Forcing yourself to not depend on tabs will do wonders for your progress as a guitarist. And I'm not saying this with any sort of condescending tone. I truly mean this in the most helpful way! 🙂 Cheers and good luck 🤜🤛

The best cover on the whole yt. I guess there is still one small anaccuracy - second bend from the opening lick is unison one. It is possible to hear on isolated guitar track.

Ah, yeah... I forgot to address that second bend. It's a rather minute detail, but I suppose of we're going for replicating the original with maximum accuracy, it's worth mentioning. I'm not 100% sure it's a unison bend or an involuntary slight double stop bend from grabbing a bit of the G string and picking a bit harder. But it's definitely something different on the 2nd of three bends. Good point!

I'm playing to the original recording, not to a click track, and it's perfectly in time with Adrian's original solo. As for the harmony, yes it's a fifth lower. I'm sure you're not the only one who noticed that lapse...
