I've been playing about 20 trad tunes for years.... all wrong and getting into an uncomfortable fingerjam. In recent times I realised (too late in life!) that I needed to rework the whole fingering. I'm delighted to see this wee video because this is very close to what I do now, and I am teaching a young nephew of mines and I'm glad that I'm on the right path now, and he at least might master this machine! Thanks very much for this. I loved your line 'Practice sometimes makes permanent, not perfect!'

it's important to note that sliding same finger on the SAME row is not easily achievable on all boxes, the one John is playing here must have a lower action (buttons do not stick out too much) as well as springs under the buttons which are not stiff, as well as buttons which have a rounded shaped head to them, other box players might find that on their machines their finger will get stuck on the next button when trying to slide on the same row

Hello John! I heard the other day of the old 'push pull' style that old time players used on B/C boxes, can you explain what that means and how it differs from the 'modern' style ? I believe Tony McMahon uses it? Thanks in advance! Sean.

Hi John , could you give me some advice, I've been learning concertina for a few years,(not a natural musician) but have had a notion of trying the accordion for a while, do you think it's possible to learns both at the same time or just stick to concertina. Many thanks.

Hi James. Five years later and I'm replying to you. Its possible to learn both. I play both. However they are very separate instruments don't learn the concertina like an accordion player. There is a system to the concertina

@@johnredmond794 hahaha, better late than never. I switched to BC Accordion and went to classes here in Omagh, but they stopped for a long time with Covid and the tutor isn't available anymore. I just can't seem to get motivated, but hopefully I'll get my finger out and go to a class somewhere in the autumn. Thank you John.

If lot of beginners make this mistake ie; running out of fingers, doesn't it mean that they are learning tunes that they are not ready for, and hence should there not be a series of tunes in numerical order for example that should be thought before students move up the ladder. I for one would appreciate it, and avoid the frustration I run into sometimes by playing tunes I'm not ready for.

I don't think the problem is learning tunes the student is not ready for, but rather learning the really simple tunes ain a way that doesnot set them up to learn tunes that are a little bit more difficult. The same problem exists in really simple tunes. John

There are places like the button box in Amherst MA. that sells beginner accordions. Also there are a couple of makes sold in Ireland ... Garveys I think is one that are good beginner models.
