Allow me to share something both profound and surreal. I am 73 years old. In my younger days I was a pretty fair percussionist. And though percussion will always be my first love, I always longed to play the piano. Later in life I started playing by ear and mostly chords. But I longed to play legitimately--especially to learn to read piano music. What I had to do to achieve that goal was to wait for you to be born, grow up, learn piano yourself, become a master at technique, decide to do videos, and finally become my mentor! How cool is that? I think it proves age really does not divide us. I practice everything that you teach. And I think you are a MASTER teacher! Thanks so much for the videos. Your talent is amazing!

This man is the GOAT, I recently applied his method of never miss a note 7 times in a row for a passage, no matter how slow it goes, throw away your ego while doing it. It turns out I am able to slowly and steadily build up the speed of playing after getting familiar with the note. You have earned a subscribe!

One good advice from my teacher on playing fast arpeggios - think of your hand as a spring, once note is played, let the spring pull your finger back so you hand is again like a paw. I have a piano teacher that I really like but I keep coming back to your videos as they give so much good advice for things to remember and work on. Can never have too much of that.

Could you do a lesson about which fingering to use in what situations so that you play fast parts more efficiently and with more clarity? There are always so many possibilities and i never know how to come up with my own, especially with less known pieces because i cant watch other performences. Maybe some strategies or general rules on fingerings?

It really all comes down to whatever puts your hands in a position where you can reach the next key with the least awkwardness and least "jumping around". Write down your fingerings in pencil as you experiment, and if you find that something feels awkward then just back up a couple notes, erase and try something else. Once you find a sequence that works, practice over and over until that exact sequence becomes muscle memory. Guidelines can help speed it up, but I'm pretty sure with a few days of experimentation you'll come up with your own guidelines 😊

As always Jazer, you are hitting on important techniques. This one happens to apply to something I had given up on being able to do because I am not fast enough. The piano opening to Seal's song IF I'M ANY CLOSER is exactly what you're talking about here. It is so fast that I thought when his band performed it live that the keyboardist had it recorded, not played live. I still don't know whether that is true or not. It is a huge challenge. I now have a new way to approach the problem.

Invariably, the best way of playing fast, scale-like, passages on the piano, is to curve the fingers into the notes with wrists up. Having low wrists puts a stress on the upper part of the wrist. The age-old technique of 'wrists up' still holds true.

Great advice! Thank you! Practising actually Czerny 299 No. 40. It's not that difficult to play. Many repetitions. The most difficult to me are the big jumps in some measurements. Especially when both hands had to do this simultaniously. I suppose it might be a good idea for a forthcomming video to let the community know what your advice is practising big leaps. I agree. I am 62 years old and have a keen interest in playing piano and learning theory. My husband, a musician himself ( he studied piano beginning at age 12, and reached grade 10 piano). While he do all the chords and pieces effortlessly, I have chosen a piece which I absolutely love, and have set a goal to play the piece proficiently by December 24th. So watching all your videos on technique is really a great help.

Hand and finger tension is definately a challenge for me. The effort to maintain the correct positioning on the keyboard has lead me to have more tension in my hands than I noticed before having to start playing a faster tempo.

But there is also some downsides. Some students tend to sustain 2 or even more notes when they place the fingers too close on the surface of the keys. In certain passages it will become a hindrance in executing the notes. I have seen many students stumbled upon this problem but the same techniques can't be fully applied to different students. The best treatment so far is to divide the practice sections into a few steps. I tell them to play slowly and lift each finger right after the previous note is sounded. The wrist should be in the right position not too low and not too high. In different case, some fingers should stay on the keys but not too close, say a bit floating on the keys. Then after the first steps are done and clarity reached it will become much easier to execute the notes while resting the finger beds right on the surface of the keys.

I partially agree with your position around the 3:00 mark on proximity to the keyboard; however, that doesn't always work and can sometimes make things worse. I don't recall specifically which piece it was - maybe the Bach toccata in Cm I was playing in college or maybe it was Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, my professor suggested high fingers. Watch how a spider moves across the floor - the legs are raised high and each one gets out of the way of the other. If a student is having problem with fast technique, the first thing to do is to slow it down with high fingers, making sure each finger is getting out of the way of the other one. Secondly, relaxation is the key. When I was playing "The Boat on the Ocean" by Rave my senior year in collegel, I couldn't play my LH fast enough under its own muscle power. It was truly frustrating. I became exhausted quickly and maxed out the speed. The key was to relax, the same way a baseball player throws a 100 mph ball. It is mind over matter. Once the muscle memory is learned, then relaxation is the key. It is a hard thing to teach a student because the mind gets in the way, but once learned, the key to speed is unlocked.

Efficiency of finger movement is certainly an important aspect. However, I don’t think it’s as simple as that. Arm alignment and movement is also an important component. The other aspect is the mental side of things. Understanding what you are playing and where the fingers are going harmonically really helps the fingers cooperate

As always thanks for the lesson Jazer, but I am confused because I have heard other pianists say to keep the wrists raised while playing as if they are suspended and supported by puppet strings yet you are teaching to lower the wrists for fast playing? Is there an appropriate time to keep the wrists raised or should the wrist always be dropped (maybe slightly)? I think that my right hand is not very large. Each time playing a scale or octave, e.g. d m s d' s m d. it's quite difficult for me to play very clearly in between . Play a maj 7 chord (f m s t) is much better. As you say, if I try not to lift myhand up, and try to be close to the surface, I find that the sound I play may he weak, and doesn't sound loud and with strength. Will I be able to overcome it?

Dear Jason, thanks for the lesson. I started to exercise the HANON pieces as you also recommend always. I also try to use the metronome while playing. I follow your recommendations! The sheet music shows “M.M. quarter note = 60 to 108” But all the notes in the piece are sixteenth notes. How fast this needs to be played? If I arrange the metronome to e.g. 60, how many notes need to be played in one / four beats. If you like pls make a short video on this. This may be also interesting for other beginners. Thanks!

I got a lot of tension in the wrists when practicing scales and I'm wondering if it's a sloppy technique. This happens especially when stretching for octives. Does this sound common when learning?

How does the lack of hammer action (although it still has semi weighed keys) in a digital piano affect playing fast? Sometimes I really can't play like you describe here, because it's hard to achieve the volume needed for each key if the it does not have the resistance and feeling of a real hammer actioned key
