No British 8 ball here but i do watch it on KZread all the time… Total respect to all you guys.. you have mad skills and it’s awesome to watch
Brilliant explanation, the best I have found on the web for British 8-ball pool. I always find adding a tiny bit of check side (just a few millimetres off centre) helps me make the rail shot.

You're absolutely right about the speed. It's pretty simple, down the rail the ball can only hit half the pocket, so hitting it slower gives it more chance. Pretty much the same as a thin cut into the middle, you would always roll them in. Great channel Mick!

Exactly!
I had always heard things like, "Hit the cue ball and the cushion at the same time" and "Play the cue ball with opposite side to give the object ball side that 'hugs' the cushion". Back then, I didn't think too much about it as I just played for a bit of fun, but recently, I've decided to try and improve my game. After thinking about it a lot, I decided to ignore all of the advice and just aim up the pot as though the cushion wasn't there, and my potting along cushions has improved drastically. You just have to be aware that the pocket is tiny from that angle, so you need to be accurate. Even more so with pace. I usually try to arrange my visit around these shots so that I don't need to put any action on the cue ball. Or I'll look for a way that I can (almost) guarantee a cannon to develop that ball. But sometimes you're left with no other option but a tricky positional shot. 🤷🏻♂️ Basically, my advice for beginners would be to simplify the shot as much as possible and just aim the pot and ignore the cushion. It's helped me loads and hopefully, it can help others. 😊

As a player in the US, the only time I've encountered a different size or weight cue ball is on a coin operated table. Ideally even there it's the same size and weight but has a magnetic center, however it's usually either larger or heavier on most bar tables here.

left spin on the cue ball will transfer right spin on the object ball making it more likely to hug the rail, also.

Cinching balls is great and all ... if you don't have to play position. Good advice for the actual 8B (or money ball, etc) ... but the bottom line, you just have to do whatever the shot requires. But, "rail shots" aren't different shots. You just have to hit the 'contact point' furthest from the center of the pocket. Like every other shot.
@mickthemachinehill

The pocket you have available to you is less due to the angle.
Would you favour putting a trace of running or check side on the cue ball to help it into the pocket too Mick? Even if position for the next ball doesn’t necessarily need it?
@mickthemachinehill
9 ай бұрын
No, generally only play side if required for position.
Mick I was wondering more about shots where the cutting angle is much sharper. I've heard some videos advocate for hitting those with top-spin (perhaps to reduce throw?) or maybe even going rail first with inside english. Would you still say just center-ball for those?
@mickthemachinehill

I would suggest to keep it simple, only apply side if you need for position. Pace control is far more relevant.
Could you please consider a timing and potting angle video mick? ✊ 🎱

Mick do you have any idea how to fix my elbow positioning when taking a shot, I have a chicken wing elbow and have noticed it puts unwanted side on the ball leading to misses pots.

cue ball is smaller, so don't hit the cushion and ball at the same time. You need to hit the object ball before the cushion. If you can't, maybe try with a bit of running side so the aim takes you away from the contact point.

The problem with rail shots is that if you miss you cant often tell if you hit it too thick or too thin because either way the ball comes away from the cushion so you dont know which way to correct.

Why would anyone use a smaller cue ball. Buy the same size.
Try doing these in The Swan in Tettenhall with a two inch roll on the table 🤣🤣 Shouldn't be in the league when its that bad imo.

imagine a sport so cheap (since they havent "fixed it") that it couldnt solve a problem just so the automatic return can throw the cueball out if scratched. have net pockets or pool pockets and the cueball could be the same size as the objectballs, and thereby not he so convoluted on the aim. I like playing it, but I feel it just cheapens the game that this cueball issue have never been fixed.

There are two solutions I've witnessed. One is making the cue ball heavier, the other is having a magnetic center. Both allow the cue ball to be diverted to a different return path.

magnetic already done on american pub tables. So uk blackball tables are hopelessly behind. It just makes it stay a barsport even more than american pool for me. @@normanhill8836
I wish the audience would be quiet for the British pool. It's not football.
Is their an argument to have the white the same size for competitive play ( the white being smaller for coin table's machines to recognise the white from colours to release white while in play) no need for this in pro game as pro don't pay to play..😊
