How to Play Dialect RPG | How To Game with Becca Scott

Комедия

Dialect is an RPG about language and how it dies. In this game, you’ll tell the story of the Isolation by building their language. New words will come from the fundamental aspects of the community: who they are, what they believe in, and how they respond to a changing world. Players take away both the story they’ve told and the dialect they’ve built together.

I am not an RPG player, but I have grown children who are, including one who's a linguist. (I plan to surprise him with this game at his next birthday.) Thank you, Rebecca Scott, for your customarily clear, to-the-point presentation -- I really enjoyed it.

I'd be a nightmare in this, requiring a new language because everyone has run out of T & the C dried up, so the new words can't use those letters anymore. Meta(phorical)gaming.

This is a sad occasion where, this game sounds clever and kind of interesting... but for some reason, it just doesn't click. Not my thing. It's probably interesting, but the idea of playing a culture whose language is dying just makes me sad, and think about realworld languages that are dying, or have died, due to colonization. You presented it well, though. Just, not my thing.

It's worth noting that the game is built to make you think about that and directly addresses it. The final chapter is called "Creating a World that Sustains Its Languages" and gives examples of ways that you can celebrate the real-world languages we have. Sometimes it takes a game like this to introduce people to real-world issues without directly using real-world issues as gameplay mechanics. The fact that you're already thinking about real world languages means that you're already in step with the designers, I think. The first time I played, when it ended, there was a sort of reverence and humility in our group because there was no way we would be able to share that experience with anyone else. It's not just fun. It's genuinely moving and extends beyond the game. I understand that you feel like it's not your thing - I just think ONLY explaining the rules like this means viewers miss out on a lot of important context.

Possibly fun game but what a monotonic tutorial. I lost track of what was happening halfway through, she seems uninterested in the game.

I have no idea what this is... but it's not a game and it's definitely not looking like fun LOL Have to give this a pass. This must be a labour of love, because I don't see it selling.

You may not see it selling, but it was successfully funded on Kickstarter and completed a good while back, so that's a problem with your eyes rather than with the game. It may not be for you, but all that means is you're not the right kind of language nerd.
