    For Phil Taylor the fast double-bass was just a warm-up exercise, not part of any song. One day, Lemmy & Eddie came to the rehearsal, heard Phil doing it. They liked it and said "keep playing!"... and "Overkill" was born (1979 before Ace) The future band Overkill heard the song and named themselves after it.

    Also I use the “cheater” method where I alternate my double kick, makes it easier at prolonged high tempo songs. I also like messing around and using double hits or rolls on the ride to add extra dynamic. Heavily inspired by the work of Paul from tragedy and my love for black metal. It’s a lot of fun to play around with that negative space with the cymbal hits while keeping the kick and snare going. Also really, really helps with coordination.

    Nice video and good teaching. Thumps up. I'm playing D-Beat for more then 20 years now. It's absolutely true to start slow, get this beat down (and clean), and keep building tempo very slow (it's annoying, I know). Even high tempo is just a question of muscle memory - I was frustrated, 10 years in, to get back to the drawing board and build that speed and muscle memory again because I noticed I was kind of sloppy, specially when playing fast. To the people learning this beat, it's easy, you can do it, just have patience. I stick to the "old school" way of playing D-Beat (like Brian Roe of Discharge) and not hit the cymbals with the kick, but keep snare and cymbal straight. Specially when you move the whole thing to the tombs it sounds more interesting then just keep hitting the cymbals (or tombs for that matter) with the kick. But that's just my personal preference. Keep it up. (Sorry english is not my first lenguage.) A good watch: on Southern Lord Records there is a drum cam of Nick from Baptists - good speed and very accurate.

    Thanks for the vid!!! I know it's preference but curious what you think about the vids teaching playing the crash/ride on the 1-2-3-4... So not mimicking the kick drum pattern... I prefer your sound and that seems like the majority of the dbeat drums I have heard, do you know of any bands who uses the ride on the 1-2-3-4??? Sounds too technical to me and is a lot harder for my brain to wrap around when playing. ALSO: what cymbals would you personally recommend for dbeat??? (As in brand/model) Thanks for the vid!!!

  • @DBeatDad

    @DBeatDad

    Hey! Not sure what you mean by 1234 forgive me...but yes it is a preference of how I play it. I really think drums is about the style you put into it. 2 things, if punk had a formula it wouldn't be punk. #2, if Drummers all needed to play same way we would all sound the same. I would say play however you prefer it. One for ease of playing, your stamina, and two whoever way fits the style you enjoy playing. Cymbals I use Paiste Rude Cymbals. They are loud as fuck, from the 80s.

    If you play 8th notes on the cymbals you technically play a polyrythm since the kick has some kind of triplet feel. I practice both, but mimicking the kick with the cymbals let‘s it swing a bit better for me

That is always my recommendation for someone on a budget, as well as getting a starter kit. However you can never go wrong with a Roland kit. Inspiring for this D beat thing they were around in the 80s and were courageous to be one of the first openly gay bands but toured recently .i was fortunate to have tea and cookies w the drummer after the show he prefers to play in bare feet and he had rainbow painted nails reminiscent of takashi 6x9.. Interesting but as they say never meet your heroes. The singer tried to kiss me..yuk! I still bought a shirt and got a hand job from said drummer.😍👍

There is a band called The Helm who blended a lot of the Metallic Hardcore sound of the nineties with bands like Assuck, His Hero is Gone etc.. and produced the sound you hear in their work. Members come from the Seattle scene and where in bands like Brotherhood, Undertow, Champion. The scene was very diverse with a lot of unique sounds that came out. You should check The Helm out! www.discogs.com/artist/1526745-The-HELM One of the songs I would like to see covered is The Helm's 1,461. It's a pretty tight jam. I have it on my channel

    I use a medium ride, great for the crash/wash sound but still a great bell for accents.

    Eleven minutes?? For this simple beat?? 😄 Most new types play it wrong, they cheat with the right hand, instead of playing each sixteenth. You do it, that's the wrong way. It isn't even always recorded like that, it just came out in the mix like that. So slow, no need to cheat.
