In this tutorial I demonstrate how to play the two solos in 'I'm Looking For Someone to Love', as played by Buddy Holly in his 1957 Crickets' recording. The video includes fast and slow demonstrations, along with full and accurate guitar 'tabs'

Small correction: I believe on the Crickets album to start the first solo he plays a double stop on the 7th fret high E and b string to a double stop on the 5th fret (open with capo) same strings just instead of the open notes.

Thanks. I know the bit you mean. That’s more of an addition than a correction. I suppose it depends on what you consider is the start of the solo. The notes you’re describing come before the first notes in my transcription. At the end of the verse before that solo Buddy played the chords E, A and B7. Norman Petty (producer/sound engineer) boosted the volume of Buddy’s guitar on the B7. The notes you’re referring to are actually 7th fret 1st string and 5th fret 2nd string (notes from that B7 chord).
Really perfect 😊

Hi, Jez. I'm revisiting this wonderful tute again. Question for you, if I may: I know BH performed the song in the key of A, capoed at the 5th fret, but is there any reason why one couldn't transpose it to the key of E and play the same solos at the top of the neck? Thanks.

Good question. Do you mean without a capo near the headstock, with open strings (usually considered the ‘bottom’ of the neck - called ‘1st position’)? Yes, it works fine down there. You would need to sing the song in E of course, which is fine if that suits your singing range. It would be too low (or much too high) for me. Interestingly, in Buddy Holly’s hit recording of That’ll Be The Day he played with a capo on the 5th as he did with this song, but when he recorded it at an earlier session in Nashville, he played it in E in first position. If you have a listen to that recording you’ll hear how he’s straining his voice and struggles to make some of the higher notes. The Nashville record producer made him do that. Bad advice!

@@RocknRollSongbook Hi again, Jez. Thanks so much for that very thorough and helpful reply. Yes, I DID mean open strings = 1st position. I DO have a low voice. Sometimes E seems right for me, but not always. Just thought I'd experiment with same on this song. Interesting BH anecdote there, thanks for sharing. Always interesting to hear about alternate takes and how songs evolve. Your lessons are outstanding, especially for someone like me, just a guy with a guitar who'd like to be able to play songs, including the solos-- or an approximation of same!! Cheers, and thanks again!! 🙏😊
