Jerry Garcia Band absolutely murders this song. I would love to see a version of Jerry’s riff for it. This video helped a ton though, thanks man

Great lesson, but it's not one-to-one the Scotty Moore version. If you listen carefully to Scotty's MYSTERY TRAIN, you can hear a slight tonal change in the basic lick: in the first measure Scotty uses the fourth, third and second string (as you did in your lesson), but in the second measure Scotty uses the fourth, second and first string instead of repeating the fourth, third and second string . And then Scotty repeats both measures the same way...

I saw an interview where Scotty said that Elvis would always just play straight major chords to everything, no minors, no sus, etc etc, while Scotty played the actual chords as written, but together, it worked.

@@chairlesnicol672 A type of chord variation, I'll let Wikipedia explain - A suspended chord (or sus chord) is a musical chord in which the (major or minor) third is omitted and replaced with a perfect fourth or a major second.[1] The lack of a minor or a major third in the chord creates an open sound, while the dissonance between the fourth and fifth or second and root creates tension. 🙂 Basically, Elvis could play guitar, but he wasn't a guitarist, he played at a basic level.

@@chairlesnicol672 No, I just play guitar! Like Elvis though, I'm not a guitarist, I'm a singer that can play guitar and bass when required, and like him, I keep it simple and leave the subtleties to the guitarists (not saying I'm as good at singing as Elvis was!).

There is only ONE version of "Mystery Train", not two --- and it's the Scotty version. If you want to sing and play "Mystery Train" do the Scotty. Setzer is doing something else, an inferior variation that just doesn't sound as good. Scotty's version is perfect, end of story. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The Elvis-Scotty-Moore version of "Mystery Train" is also my favourite one, it's much more relaxed and more melodic than the Brian Setzer version. Most of the cover-versions are played much too fast for my taste.
