I grew up watching my grandpa and his buddies playing bocce; my takeaway was whichever team yelled the loudest and waved their hands most effectively won, lol. It was all in fun, lots of bluffing and bluster, as well as legit gaming. Great after dinner game, while enjoying a little glass of icy cold lemoncello!

Thank you for explaining the game. I grew up traditional Italian in Washington State but this is one thing my beautiful mother never taught us. I had 13 aunts and uncles on my mothers side, all full blooded Italian, along with my mother. 14 relatives plus my grandfather from Italy on my mothers side. My dad is also Italian yet never talked about the game. I have a set of bocce balls that are medium weight (I feel it's a great weight for all ages) and a neighbor and I want to try the game. Your video helped me a lot.

Isabella A Rossellini in Italy it's usually played by old people all year round. Young kids also play during summer at the beach, often with sets of plastic bocce full of water. In Italy most stands in beach towns have very cheap plastic sets, either in kid size or adult size, but obviously you can't use the plastic ones on cement or asphalt. Only on sand or grass. ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sn2W9vKTL._SX300_.jpg www.toyx.it/open2b/var/catalog/images/6849/0-f68fcced-680.jpg ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51npYNBDPyL._SY300_.jpg i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v1/283119424/Bocce_Ball_Set.jpg cdn2.eminza.it/site_deco_ext/images/rep_articles/gra/pe/petanque-boules-x-8_30840.jpg

I am Italian and have practiced bocce inconsistently for around twenty years as a hobby. In a nutshell: I know its rules perfectly, but I suck spectacularly at it! Never guessed anybody actually played the game in Nashville, OMG! For most Italians, who have never touched a boccia in their life, it is rather sort of a socializing ritual than a real sport: you get some snacks, maybe a glass of wine or a beer, and in the meanwhile you casually throw a couple low-end water- or sand-filled bocce on the beach. For elder people, it is another story: they used to play the game as a pastime after a day of hard work in the field or the factory. They did not see it as a sport --- good Lord, no! There was no such thing as a 'sport' for them, i.e. an intentional expenditure of physical energy just for the sake of competing *and* keeping yourself fit. They would keep themselves fit --or exhausted, if you prefer-- by simply doing their labor-intensive job. Playing bocce therefore does not require you to be extremely strong or slim or tall or fast. You have to be patient, strategic, and above all, PRECISE. That is the key, and that is also why the rules have got incredibly complicated: both in order to regulate every possible situation, of course, but also to make the game as demanding and head-scratching as possible. The free-style bocce you guys enjoy there is perfect as it is for entertaining guests. Do not change a bit. But you might want to consider the possibility of introducing some or all the rules of the Punta Raffa style, the most widespread one in Italy and abroad, for those who want to 'give it a bit of kick' and play the game more regularly. If I am not mistaken, the US Bocce Federation provides an English translation of the rules in .pdf format.

Great video, very informative. I first learned about bocce ball through playing it in a few different video games over the years and I've always been interested in it. I recently was fortunate to find a heavy duty set of bocce balls at a thrift shop and bought it with the intent to learn to play! My only complaint about this video is there is no discussion of how to set up a playing field: what size should it be Dimension wise, for your front to back wall and distance between your side walls but perhaps (unlike most things in life), the Size Doesn't Matter?

As a kid the field was anywhere and we got very creative,up and down inclines, around trees, etc. Regulation fields are very intimidating as they are 90 feet long x I think 12 if I'm not mistaking. But only pros can really play on those as they are too big. Ours at the restaurant are 55 feet long by 12. You can make an inexpensive and portable field with 4 in plumbing pipes. They make a nice light boarder.

I can see how bocce balls can get broken. There seems to be a global mixing of Italian bocce and French pentaque. Your inclusion of pentaque at 3:56 and 4:28 demonstrates this. Though the balls visually appear the same, the bocce balls are generally made of resin as is the pallino or pollina. The pentaque balls are generally made of hollow steel and the cochonnet or jack is wood. Bocce is typically palm up release bowling and pentaque is palm down release backhand tossing. These are different games and resin does not stand up to the impact abuse of pentaque. I don't play either game but just acquired a quality second hand bocce set and have been researching the game. Just passing on info.

Just acquired a Petanque set. Found correct spelling. It was in a second hand store listed as a Bocce set. They are smaller but the steel ball weight is impressive. The cochonnet is not the traditional wood but a gold tone plated steel ball. I guess that is to survive repeated impacts. Just need to make a scoring and throwing ring.

I’m from Valdese, NC which was founded by Italian Protestants (Waldensians). I played Bocce a long time ago but I never heard of that name for the white ball. It was always called the bouccini. I guess it’s a regional variation. I wonder if there are other names for it. As for its origin, I’m thinking it may have been a Roman game as variants of it are played in Europe. I miss playing Bocce.

No. I'm a county bowler. Our bowls are much bigger and heavier, and have biases, so they turn, also, you don't drop them. And you have to stand on a mat. There are a lot of rules to bowls!

Should've went to KZread and look up "how to play bocce ball" instead of googling it. I'd rather watch and let them explain. I hate reading these long ass rules, but it looks like a fun game like tossing the bean bags.
