How to Play a Melodic Tumbao on 3 Congas

In this video, I show you how to play a Melodic Tumbao on 3 Congas. There are so many variations of Tumbaos with 2 Congas alone, so there are infinite possibilities with 3 Congas. This is just a Simple variation that I use. Gives the groove a nice color and can enhance the depth of the Tumbao you're playing. I also have a little surprise announcement for you guys!!! :) Hope you enjoy this video!!!

Thank you! 🙏🏼 The drums actually come with the green/teal glitter on them.

So Roman, I have a two part question. I noticed clearly that every time you go to your left TUMBAO it’s after a 4 measure bar. Is it a bad Habit musically to do a melodic fill after just 3 measures ? Will it throw a band off if it’s in a salsa song vs contemporary rock . The reason for that question is, I took a lesson from a experienced percussionist that said I can cause a train wreck on the timing in certain band situations. Richie

Hey Richard, I would say, it all depends on the music and I would also say it can depend on the musicians as well, believe it or not. There isn’t a “rule” for fills, just make sure it’s musical and you aren’t just throwing stuff in there just because. It still has to make musical sense within what is happening in the music. As far as my point with musicians, sometimes depending on the genre familiarity of your fellow musicians, you could also throw them off with your fill if they aren’t well versed in the music you’re playing or if they aren’t very strong, tempo wise. Hopefully that makes sense and helps.

@@RomanPercussion Roman , That makes alot of sense man .I will keep that in mind . I'm on the right track. What's amazing about our instrument is that ,after playing for 30 yrs ,it exciting to peel the layers of little bad habits to always grow in skill. Almost 4 yrs ago I decided to take drum set lessons .wow what a difference it has made in my knowledge of percussion and how to engage musically more efficiently with a drummer. Thanks Roman, Richie.
