** ABOUT ME **
Hello! My name is Jay, and I am a long-time veteran of storytelling and a semi-seasoned DM! I began playing Dungeons and Dragons roughly 5 years ago and began my first ever game as the DM. I figured things out by watching online games and fumbling my way through the rules, and never looked back! I've fallen in love with TTRPG's in general and want to share my experience and thoughts with the world and community I love so much. I currently DM two separate games regularly, and continue to learn every day.
** ABOUT THE CHANNEL **

Wow !! This is SO relevant with my actual campaing. I am playing a wild magic sorcerer that fear to harm people that she loves, and recently this very thing became a reality. She had a surge that got one party member killed, plus two others also dead but miraculously raised back up. She blamed it all to herself and was so close to just abandon the group. I was ready - as a player AND as my character - to be rejected and having to make an other character... but they forgave her. Heck, they reassured her, saying that it was ok and not actually her fault, that they can help her find a way to control her power, even though wild magic is considered an illness for most people in our setting. You can bet all the gold in the world that she will be 100% loyal to this group form now on and will sacrifice her very life to keep them safe, because she finally found people that don't run away and truly accept her for who she is. GREAT video !! Keep up the good work

Love this. I had a PC who had chosen to be an outcast for... reasons. She was so afraid of rejection that she was a spitting cat towards anyone she met because if she drove people away first, they couldn't have a chance to reject her. She's been on a huge journey, slowly integrating into the party, which has been so fun to play. Also, as an aside, loving your look in this video!

I had this character idea of an aasimar that contracted lycanthropy by the hand of his best friend and was actually cast out of his community. Whom having failed to healed him, they were gonna chain him up till they found a cure or kill him if they didn't by the time the full moon came. So this character, a fighter. Wants to seek his friend whilst trying to avoid going on a rampage and whilst trying to not succumb to the whispers of his new "Celestial guide". I came up with pc idea on my own, but I think he fits this video nicely. He fears killing innocents or infecting/harming others or worse, end up dead.

Through his early struggles with self esteem, failure, and OCD, he came out the other side stronger and kinder than ever, and now he's living his dream and adored as a role model by music and gaming fans alike. That song is true, and applies to all y'all awkward nerds out there.

I am VERY guilty of making outcast characters, someone with a tragic backstory where they don't fit in with the rest and ends up all alone... however, most of the time they find fellowship within the main party and grow as a character. So even though they might be considered outcasts where they come from, within the party they become part of something more and learn to use their skills in benefit to the party. Even if everyone else around them don't get my characters' vibe.

My newest character is a Tabaxi Bloodhunter, his home forest was attacked by a Vampire, and his family had to escape to a new home. He got separated from his friends and his family got trapped and died. He was outcasted by circumstance, he knows who did it and got his hemocraft powers to get revenge on the one who did it. He hides his inner darkness with a mask of happiness. He wants to make more friends and hopefully learn how to reflect that outer happiness inwardly. He wants to be truly happy again.

This is so on point and helpful, great timing. I'm about to jump into a campaign as a bard who put his noble upbringing behind him to help the common man. The rub is he uses the same social dodging to fit in with the commonfolk, as he did with the nobles. Leaving him feeling like a shell who doesn't belong to either group. He is, in a way, a self inflicted outcast in the general circles he runs in, but will be so happy to be included with this group of adventurers and I'm so excited to explore his feelings as he realizes he doesn't need to fake anything.

I actually am playing an outcast character in a friend's campaign that I've been really enjoying, for several reasons. They're a shifter in a setting where lycanthropy is very very rare, and they grew up as an orphan because of it. They did eventually find 'their' people, but then they lost them. It wasn't until they met the party that they finally got to meet someone else that gets the looks of fear and the term 'monster' thrown at them. The campaign is a world hopping one, and this new party member is a siren (reflavored sea elf), and she's a lot more comfortable with herself than mine is, and it's created a fun dynamic with the two of them.

I think the character Baldrick from Narrative Declaration's campaign Rotgrind fits really well with that concept him being a terrorist alchemist that pushes everyone away because of the dangerous things he does to take revenge against the corrupt government in the main city Outset, but even if he pushes everyone away when he gets into jail for the 100th time he mets the rest of the party that just wont go away and just stick with him leading to slowly opening and care for the rest of the group

this also reminded me of something I saw about how there traditionally only 2 kinds of hero journeys/character arcs (i think specifically in Disney moves?). the first is an outcast that is rejected by society and is seen as flawed goes on a journey and at the end society changes and excepts him but he dose not change, example: hunchback of hunchback of Notre dame, Home, bugs life, ... to name a few. the other is where the main character is seen as flawed goes on a journey and changes and grows to be excepted into the society, lion king (as seen by Zazu in "can't wait to be king"), Hercules, beauty and the beast... to name a few. my understanding of outcast is a journey of expectance in society either growing into someone that could be excepted or proving that the flaws and traits that you are outlasted from have value. they also don't have to be sunned to be outcast Luna Lovegood from "Harry potter" is a good example. she is a loner outcast when we meet her but later she shown that she was loyal to the people close to her, just not a lot of people would get close to her because she was weird or loony. I feel the loner part is when they give up or questioning when the person they spend time with will hurt them next either by maliciously hurting them or unconsciously doing or saying something that hurts them, my thoughts is that this is something they are already saying to them selves that this person is reinforcing. an example of this is I had a barbarian who saw them selves as a disgrace and a monster and after the barbarian accidently scared a person to death a fellow player called him a monster. this lead him to spacing himself from the party because of this and backstory reason of lost family he blamed himself for.

...After thinking about it, I honestly have a habit of playing characters who, while preferring to go at things alone, also begrudgingly knows that they'd be fucking dead without other party members so they fully embrace being a team member from early on while also complaining about it the whole time...and, usually, just accepting being the group over time. GRANTED, the reasonings behind why the character ends up going through this have all been different...but they all ended up in the same place: - My first character was part of a thieves guild where back-stabbing is a thing and joining group where that doesn't happen at all doesn't seem real...but the alternative to not working with them was to fall to Strahd and my character had a friend to save. - My favorite DnD character was cursed as a werewolf by King Lycan himself (it was an Ancient Greek campaign) and preferred to be alone for the safety of others but still joined forces with the party because the alternative was to live in a world of just monsters with no one being able to fight back (especially when one of those monsters was Lycan himself). - My last DnD character was once a mindless robot/weapon of war until an explosion activated a switch which activated his soul and he left the war so he could live a life of peace...only to discover that every place he came across had deadly problems and he had no choice but to join a group (while, at the least, making sure they would never use him the way his maker did). - My Dragon Age character was a survivor of a purged people and ended up joining a group that would help him get justice and revenge for it. - My current character (which is also my first Pathfinder character) was brought back to life prior to the campaign beginning via an accident by another player's character and the group the pair would end up joining has saved her life on multiple occasions now from both the big bad and a god of death who have been trying to return her to the afterlife and are willingly continuing to do so.

Currently playing a Blood Hunter/Paladin. He was a servant of Tempus, worked his way through the Dragons in Cormyr during the war our campaign is set against. He was leading a small group that got ambushed, panicked, and hid under the bodies as his men died. For his cowardice, Tempus cursed him to always hear their screams when things are too quiet, and always taste their blood in his mouth (so he’s constantly drinking) His surface fear is that he’ll never be free of the punishments. His true fear is that he’ll abandon his new party like he did his men. So now it manifests in him throwing himself into situations without care or concern for his own life, because he doesn’t want to be the reason his party dies, except it often means biting off more than he can chew. The Blood Hunter levels are Profane Soul, because even though Tempus turned his back due to his cowardice, the Red Lady is choosing to offer him a path to redemption, while keeping a very close watch over him (acting almost as a patron than a god)

The very first character I ever played was an outcast of outcasts. They were an orphan of a nomadic tribe who was killed because they passed through a hidden village of paranoid people who judged them for how they looked. Raised by an assassin on the run who felt bad for the literal baby. He took up that trade and went out into world being told to never mention who trained him. One day he let it slip and the events that unfolded got the one person who he felt he truly loved killed a female assassin he gotten close to and opened up to. So now he thinks friends are a liability and since he being hunt by an assassin organization getting close to anyone will get them killed so he refuses to get close to people ever again. It was his mistake that took his friend away from him before he could even tell her how he felt. After all. (There more details but I short-handing it). Rest of party had their own issues with one person also not being there to make friends only to make a buck (group was hired as bodyguards for an expedition) I unfortunately never got to finish playing the character. Game fell through and group disbanded so I never got to fully explore the character unfortunately hopefully I will one day

Or just likes being alone. You could have them roleplay as being a loner. The players arn’t outcasts they are adventurers. Maybe that could regret the action. At the start of the video I was thinking to make them an ally. Maybe a situation where they have to use magic to save a life, teaching them. People shouldn’t change, they should be true to themself. A weakness and strength are separate, how does getting distracted help you focus.

Loved the video and NSP reference! But alternatively, how would you guys approach playing a character who sometimes NEEDS to go and do their own thing away from the party due to introversion or their personality? I understand that you need to play WITH your party for the majority of the time, but how would you tackle the rare occasions when you do your own thing, without alienating the rest of the players?

  • @FaisLittleWhiteRaven
    @FaisLittleWhiteRaven3 ай бұрын

Outcasts huh? I think in a way they might be my most common character type actually though I'm not usually intentionally trying for them and I tend to make the 'outcast' factor more an internal thing rather than an external one. Like my very first character, an Aarakocra Way of Mercy monk named Atielli was a fun case because personality wise she's outwardly friendly and helpful and like, she's a big yellow bird who lets you pat her so pretty much always Atielli got positive attention wherever she went (NPC and party included) but well, as a person my Atielli always felt very other because well. She's a big yellow bird in a world of ground based people who she's deeply, deeply aware she isn't like (she'll die of old age before her ancient mentor will. People always stop and stare when she enters a ton. Her natural instincts in conversation mess up communication all the time etc) and could very easily be seen as a 'monster' or potentially even 'dinner' if she doesn't give off the right first impression. Also she was raised by humans who knew nothing of Aarakocra so when she finally met some and they said stuff like 'You seem very comfortably on the ground' and got confused at her asking them about if it's 'normal' to take almost a year to learn to fly, she felt even more isolated... Atielli was very internal with her 'outcast' issues and it took until her best friend in the party Rhea (a WoM monk/barbarian kobold) confessed liking her and she proceeded to go a massive 'Ace panic' freakout over potentially losing the only friendship she felt was 'real' before anyone realized that 'cute, always friendly and kind' Atielli might not be doing so great but daamn it was satisfying having her slowly but surely getting more and more willing to open up about her real feelings on always being 'other' all the time and becoming comfortable actually screaming and sassing about things when shit hit the fan instead of bottling it all up until self harm/explosion point

Almost all of the people in my party are different versions of outcasts. Sort of some are more lone wolf like, but all are outcasts. For mine, they genuinely outcast themselves by leaving their family. Why? They were burnt out because they were a parentified eldest child growing up and now that all their siblings and cousins are adults and settled into their careers…my character decided putting up with everything they did just wasn’t worth it. My character is now the family black sheep for their decision. For another, well….his dice decided his backstory would have been very edgy so he is an ex solider turned mercenary with a sword that possesses him to make him go mad. We did recently lift that by the way, but he is still learning to have faith. Bit of a lone wolf but his character does little things to show he genuinely cares for the party and wants to protect them. We have another who is an inventor type that maybe could be considered very like Mr Freeze from, yes, Batman. He is cold and practical to a fault and very intelligent, but he always shows ways in which he cares to the group, both by mentoring, and also protecting them to show he cares. We also have another who is a very sheltered sort, very friendly but often runs off to do her own thing because she used to basically be a street kid and orphan so is only just now learning what it means to have not toxic friends but friends that are found family. She is lone wolf in that aspect herself but in a different vibe that some of the others. Then we have our ranger. He is more lone wolf and outcast because of the nature of his abilities and profession and also because he is simply more shy and introverted. He is friendly and also care takes the group, checking in with those he is closest to pretty often and offering his moral support. And of course, support in battle too. And we have our last one which is an outcast but not a lone wolf. In fact, it’s really better to say he is the heart of the party in a lot of ways. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is sympathetic to everyone, hearing them out and willing to offer the perspective of a less jaded person. Something the party needs given how much more naturally inclined most are to be (mine acts less jaded but, naturally is quite so, mostly does it because they also serve as a mentor). Anyway, basically it’s all different ways one can use the outcast trope and give it different flavors that mesh well. The group all very much cares for each other even with some of their more lone wolf tendencies.

So yeah, it would be a very long series if anyone bothered to do more than write notes on the campaign. It’s still ongoing actually. Been super fun though! Personally got to lore drop a bunch of bits and pieces of my character’s backstory recently so that’s pretty neat.

Fun example of shunned lone wolfs: Naruto. Naruto was shunned by the entire village. His drive is acceptance, so he tries to get the girl he has a crush on to notice him and dislikes her crush. Sakura doesn’t have natural physical talent as a ninja, and had to carve her place to become an average student. She is a pack leader in the Sasuke fan club race, and hates Naruto for several reasons. Sasuke lost his entire family thanks to his brother, and believes nobody could understand his pain and rage. He hates Sakura for being an annoying deadweight not taking their role seriously, and accepts Naruto as a rival to push him further. When Sasuke decides to leave the village, Sakura tries to stop him. That is the wrong person for the job, and he leaves. It took his brother revealing how everything was for him and the village that changed his mind. Every party member isn’t like the average ninja graduate, and is excluded from their peers. They each have somebody they want to bond to, and somebody who keeps that rejection going. Their stories aren’t about blue skies and rainbows of friendship, but how people of different backgrounds can overcome adversity to become family and find acceptance.
