I played a tiefling multiclass GOOW/Wizard, which sounds really stupid but his backstory was awesome. He was training as a wizard when he found out that his cabal of wizards (were very evil and worked with fiends/etc) were eventually going to kill him once he hit a certain level. He was trapped in the compound so he made a pact with Zargon the Returner to gain enough power to escape, after he escaped he tried to just study as a wizard but his patron wasn't going to let him off easy and kept threatening his soul/family unless I did his bidding. Whenever I would level up I would make a wisdom saving throw to see if I could gain a level as a wizard or if my patron forced me to gain a level as a warlock. My spellcasting wasn't as strong as if I had stuck to one path but it was fun.

That's honestly the best DnD has to offer, I had talked with my DM to multiclass as a cleric/paladin for a half-elf with the catch that I had to stop at paladin lv 2 and stay on the cleric path until I had made a hard choice of vows. He spun a whole sub-plot about it and threw some tragedy at him, eventually he became a paladin of vengeance and a bane to the race of Orcs, half or no, and defender of elves. It was really fun role-playing.

One fun combo you can use is combining awakened mind with the suggestion spell. As you said, you can’t get around the verbal component of suggestion with telepathy because the suggestion is not itself the verbal component. You *can* use awakened mind to deliver the actual suggestion, meaning that you can use suggestion on deafened creatures or creatures that would normally not be able to understand your language.

I created a pact of the blade goolock as an antagonist/rival for one of my players who had the same patron but went pact of the tome. While her spellcasting wasn't quite as strong, she had excellent offensive capabilities, especially in melee. As part of her background, she used to be a kind woman who loved to study the stars, but after discovering something she shouldn't have, she slowly went insane. For a while, she thought she was special after gaining her powers, but once she discovered that the player was also "blessed" by the same patron, she became incredibly jealous. One of the more fun villains I've made.

I played a variant human focusing on the idea of madness. He was training to become a bard (MI: Bard was the initial feat), but one of the GOO's didn't want him on that path. The GOO spun a bit of its essence into a cursed lute and dropped it in the character's path. On picking it up, he was in the psychic presence of the GOO and faced with a choice: swear a warlock's oath or die. Terms of the agreement were "no multiclassing" and you're stuck with the pact of the chain. The Dm used Ghostfire Gaming's supplements, so exposure to the power of the GOO was also turning the character into an aberration. I tried to play him as someone slowly watching both his humanity and his sanity slip away. Early on, the cursed lute made a great improvised weapon because he would break it over someone's head in fights, but of course, it returned in pristine condition the next morning.

I'm currently playing a great old one warlock in a campaign and would highly recommend metamagic adept as a feat to consider. Combining the often overlooked "Careful spell" with sickening radience means you can drop sickening radience in the middle of combat with your melee companions and they don't need to worry about taking damage from it, plus they can help keep enemies in the bubble

  • @Hazel-xl8in

    @Hazel-xl8in

careful spell only affects one round of saves (it might not even interact with sickening radiance at all because the save happens when you start your turn, not when you cast the spell), and the best part about sickening radiance is keeping your opponent in their for a long period of time. it’s not a guaranteed “these creatures are immune to the spell”, it’s just that they succeed on the first save.

What I'd love to see/play at some point is a party with a handful of control casters and bludgeoning melee builds with Crusher. @@Hazel-xl8in careful spell reads, When you cast a spell that forces other creatures to make a saving throw, you can protect some of those creatures from the spell's full force. To do so, you spend 1 sorcery point and choose a number of those creatures up to your Charisma modifier (minimum of one creature). Great suggestions, but it's still ultimately a good kit IN SPITE of the subclass, not necessarily because of it. The features are in dire need of some tweaks to really synergize with the rest of the kit. Awakened Mind, for example, should just give you normal telepathy, given how readily available that power is via other means. Create Thrall would be great at lower levels, and should just be upgraded to a Dominate effect at 14th level, given the requirements for the target to be incapacitated. It's all about madness and breaking minds, so let the player actually BREAK some minds!

I cannot claim this idea, saw it on reddit and cannot remember who came up with it but its perfect for a great old one warlock. The PC is a middle aged man who may have gone through some turmoil recently or just feels the affects of a mid life crisis and is urged by a friend to speak to a professional about it. So he goes to see a therapist and get help and the therapist does indeed help quite a lot and even suggest that he begin to travel because the exercise would be good and it would be better for him to get out and see the world more. The therapist even says that he will go on the road with him so he can continue his weekly sessions. The therapist is by this point, obviously a very ambiguous and mysterious patron, unseen by others but an ever present driving force in the PCs life. I always really liked that idea. haven't had the chance to play it yet but soon!

I played an Aasimar Great Old One warlock, that was a student of Witherbloom, so my kinda mentally weird boy was an unusual goolock, since he used his herbalist kit all the time, resurrected a few party members, healed them almost every game, and also was considered a priest of Cthulhu. I took a feat so he could cast augury, and use a holy symbol as an arcane focus. Also, he had a pact of tome, so he had a lot of clerics cantrips, and a sick Cthulhu holy symbol.

Would have liked some ideas on how to use Create Thrall but otherwise excellent work. The Spell Sniper feat would also have worked in this build, though maybe something for later in the build. If they can get max Charisma with just one ASI and half-feat you have a good number of spaces for more feats. Wonder if you could get a gazer familiar via Pact of the Chain? Really excited to see this one! I like that you emphasize its potential as a deceiver/trickster, as I have a warlock concept that sits somewhere between GOO and Fey. While it's easy to write off GOO as all tentacles and madness, I actually think the playstyle goes quite well as a trickster type of patron and GOO can also serve as a placeholder for service to a more abstract, universal force like Chaos or the Weave itself. I've been hoping to run a GOO Changeling Warlock in service to Chaos/the Eberron version of The Traveller (not to be confused with the CritRole Traveller). Focus on the philosophy of change being a necessary and positive force, as order leads to stagnation and ultimately lays the groundwork for abusers of the system. Their patron is aloof and it's hard to say if there is even a face behind the forces of chaos that the warlock pledges themselves to. Definitely wanna lean into Chain Pact for an invisible scout for informational purposes and using telepathy to show confusion and play a social intrigue angle. I also love the idea of a GOO follower who is super charismatic and affable as a counterweight to the Lovecraftian norms of a mad weirdo.

Cam confirm, playing a fairy race warlock with fey touched as a feat really helps mitigate the low number of spell slots warlocks get. Can't recommend this route enough ☺️

The first 5E character I made (back before Tasha's, so I've got nothing from that) is a Halfling Great Old One Warlock with the Charlatan background - he was a conman selling fake potions and incantations to the rubes in the sticks until they tried burning him at the stake, at which point he tried to bluff with some fake magic words and accidentally contacted... something out there. Now his blood is getting slower and slower in his veins and he can't sleep! It's great. I wasn't particularly interested in or knowledgable about how to maximize things, but he's been fun to play and I did gravitate towards Pact of the Tome (a tattered little notebook he won't let anyone see). He's level 9 but I don't think I took any feats, just boosted stats (although I absolutely would have taken Telepathic and Telekinetic if they'd been available to me). Invocations in order taken: Book of Ancient Secrets, Armor of Shadows, Agonizing Blast, Aspect of the Moon, Tomb of Levistus Spells are a bit funky, since I was coming into an existing homebrew campaign that started pre-5E and they continued the practice of not being restricted to class spell lists but you can't just take any spell off other lists, it kind of has to be flavour appropriate for your character (this is usually just a quick conversation with the DM). It's worked okay for balance, since nobody's character concept has been "I cast only the most OP spells". I think I mostly stuck to the Warlock list though. Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, Mage Hand, Toll the Dead (bonus Tome cantrips: Chill Touch, Mending, Thaumaturgy) Spells: Armor of Agathys, Chaos Bolt, Cloud of Daggers, Counterspell, Dispel Magic, Banishment, Greater Invisibility, Sickening Radiance, Far Step, Synaptic Static Tome Rituals: Identify, Find Familiar Although (and this was an idea the DM and I had while riffing about character stuff) he only uses Find Familiar to enchant portions of his strangely thick and sluggish blood into little minions and spies (which function per the spell); he's upset/concerned/resistant enough about what's happening to him that he only does this when really needed, and destroys each 'familiar' as soon as he can. The campaign is on pause, really hope I get to play him again. For one thing I've been carrying around my best friend's charred bones in a bag after he turned and we had to kill him (read: that player had to leave the campaign and enthusiastically gave his ok to these events) and there is a whole cult of demonic vampire elves I need to talk to about it.

I think i cool video to follow this series that nobody talks enough about is how to play a Battle master fighter. We see the class as basic but with all their options and the variety of approaches you can take to being a fighter i think that would be a mistake to ignore them.

Getting hold of Silvery Barbs (through Fey Touched or multiclass) would help the build by letting the character force a target to make a re-roll. One level of Shadow Magic Sorcerer might do wonders.

Keeping Hex at higher levels can still be useful; starting at Warlock lvl 5 where your spell slots become 3rd level, Hex lasts 8 hours. This means you could use it on whatever, kill the thing (say, an ant you find on the ground), take a short rest at the start of your adventuring day (like, take the last watch out of the 8h long rest) to replenish the slot, and still have it active to move around with your Bonus Action. It's not huge, but it becomes a sort of resource-free boon to your damage until you need to cast another concentration spell.

Want to point out that at 3rd-4th spell level Hex can be concentrated on for 8 hours. If you have Eldritch Mind and Resilient Con you should expect to be able to hold this up for a long time. If you have to roll 3-4 initiatives before you get a short rest this is clutch and the +2d6 per Eldritch Blast cast adds up. Also Tomelock for the win. My key tome pick was shillelagh to combo with green flame blade & hex as a close combat tool to clear rushing minions.

I want to hear more about the actor feat. I assume you referred to a player in your game who has used it to great effect, but it is a feat I have never seen anyone take. It could be interesting to hear how you have seen it used. Great description of this subclass - I always thought it had great story potential but was a bit underwhelming. This is a nice new perspective for me.

Had a player go with a half-elf GOO warlock with the pact of the blade. The character would throw up darkness, had polearm mastery and sentinel, and would telepathically bluff and intimidate foes while in the darkness. She was a nightmare and great at locking foes down with RP and mechanics. Also used create thrall to charm a hobgoblin warlord who joined the party. Permanent follower with the leadership feature was AMAZING, and gave the party perma-bless basically. You can play against type with the GOO warlock and they are still amazing.

I've played a GOOlock about 4 or 5 times, and one thing that I will never be tired of is the sheer amount of roleplay potential GOOlocks have. I built mine up with a number of psychic/mind-fuckery spells like Crown of Madness, toying directly with the brains of enemies and utilizing Awakened Mind and an my godly CHA for pseudo-suggestion, which turned out to be super useful. Definitely not the strongest Warlock subclass, but definitely one with a lot of fun potential.

One of the things I love about Warlock Patrons are that several of the various Patrons could be reskinned to specific Great Old Ones due to the features (the expanded spells, less so but a knowledgable and creative player could make it work). Examples: Fathomless= Cthulhu Archfey= Nyarlathotep, the Black Pharoh G.O.O = The Unspeakable One ("have YOU seen the Yellow Sign?" *casts Dissonant Whispers or Hideous Laughter*) Fiend: the Hungry Star (made that one up; Azathoth or something as an option) Hexblade: Nub-Shiggurath (the pact weapon is the warlock's own limbs adaptively mutating from the Mother of Monsters' "blessings". Also i think I mispelled that one) or The Hungerer in Darkness (weapon is formed of solid shadows) Celestial: The Color out of Space ("heals you now; drains you later") Undead: Suquathwa..i'd have to read up on the Patron features and remind myself the Old One's name, but basically a Wendigo writ to Edlritch Horror levels. Genie: 4 options based on element: Marid = Dagon, Dao = Ygg, fire and air I'm not sure but one could find the appropriate Patron by perusing Greater and Lesser Old Ones on Lovecraftpedia wiki. That's just a neat reskin idea in my brain for a few years. Maybe someone will take the idea and do a breakdown explaining how Patron+Pact+Spells+Invocations = Old One X. Personally, for a Great Old One patron my go-to is the King in Yellow (the Unspeakable One). Alternatively, after watching this video talking of Sickening Radiance and tentacles and manipulating movement and speed, it put me in mind of "The Singularity" but also utilizing multiple beings as the collective Patron: the Revelations of Melech from 4th edition, detailing several stars, comets, etc. of the Starpact Warlock which the G.O.O. replaced in 5th ed. The Starpact Patron could replace the Fiend (fire from hungry stars), Archfey (interplanar travel and madness) and Great Old One (eldritch insight from beyond the cosmos) as well as other patrons, if one wanted to stretch their creativity to have a cosmic horror theme but different mechanics. Of course, the same could be said for various Fiends and Archfey but I'm a Lovecraft fan so my mind don't go there.

One Feat worth considering if you have a Dexterity of 14 is Moderately Armored. Slapping on a Breastplate, and picking up a Shield, boosting your AC by 6 can be quite helpful. And in my games, as well as most others I'm sure, you can cast spells without War Caster as long as you have one hand free. It can really increase your chances of survival if a melee focused enemy gets too close, as well as give you the comfort of having an AC of 18, which is pretty nice, even for a melee character.

I actually want to play a great old one warlock and go pact of the blade and reflavor the entire thing as a psionic knight that has limited control of their psionic abilities. I am well aware of the psi knight fighter and such, but this would provide a lot more spellcasting options and just sounds fun. The only downside is, as you aren't going hexblade, you either need to focus on the rapier and focus Dex or go strength, which would require either moderately armored and heavily armored or a @ level fighter dip

Pact of the tome is great, especially if you're trying to hide the fact that you're a Warlock for RP reasons. Once you bust out Shillelagh and Thorn Whip, not to mention casting various rituals from any spell list, most onlookers are unlikely to assume you're a Warlock.

I like to think that I could use awakened mind to creep out enemies who don't know I'm there. A half asleep guard hears a whisper that they can't determine the source of, whispering in their mind about all the evil things that are in store for him. Or a rude shop owner will start hearing voices speaking in a language they don't understand, but can tell is evil...

I’ve been toying around with a Kenku GOO warlock for the next campaign, with a hefty Tzeentch inspiration. The idea is to partner the Kenku’s vocal imitation with proficiencies in Deception, Intimidation, and Persuasion and Mask of Many Faces. I also gave him the Courtier background. I got some high rolls while building him so there’s DEX:17, CON: 16, and CHA: 16. This is a very Tzeentch-inspired character so I’m going for a master of illusions and deceptions and trickery. The combination of the Kenku’s vocal mimicry with at-will Disguise Self means he’s going to be the perfect infiltrator. And I’m aiming to take inspiration from horror movies for some of his illusions.

The idea i came up with for my GOO Warlock Patron was "Timelord Rassilon" who wanted me to get his name known, so i acted crazy and always introduced my "invisible friend Rassilon" and use my awakened mind ability to "speak" to someone for Rassilon! He was a half elf spy for the Elven Federation who controlled a majority of the continent and drove most other races out of their territory and chose Pact of the Tome!

At level ten, this is the selection: Half-elf > Drow Magic (Dark Elf Heritage): Dancing Ligts, Faerie Fire, Darkness Cantrips: Eldritch Blast; Frostbite; Mind Sliver; Thunderclap 1st lvl: Arms of Hadar; Dissonant Whispers; Hex 2nd lvl: Mind Spike; Phantasmal Force 3rd lvl: Hunger of Hadar; Summon Lesser Demons 4th lvl: Blight; Summon Greater Demon; 5th lvl: Contact Other Plane Pact of the Tome Cantrips: Blade Ward; Toll the Dead; True Strike Magic Initiate: Mage Hand; Minor Illusion, Find Familiar War caster Eldritch Invocations: Agonizing Blast Aspect of the Moon Book of Ancient Secrets: -1st lvl: Chaos Bolt; Identify Armor of Shadows -Mage Armor Gift of the Protectors

You can get a familiar using Pact of The Tome (if you take Book of Ancient Secrets). Unlike a POTC familiar, you would only be able to use the familiar for utility purposes, like scouting and helping with attacks. That's not a huge restriction, because you probably would much rather make the attack yourself (with eldritch blast). If you become a chain warlock, you should learn Investment of The Chain Master. It will allow you to command your familiar to attack without sacrificing your spellcasting, and make the familiar's attacks far more debilitating. Pact of The Tome gives warlocks utility casting that potentially rivals wizards, while still being a powerhouse on the battlefield.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the assumption that in order to trigger effects when an enemy moves within an area, the enemy has to move into that area of its own volition. As in, you can't move them into AoE forcibly and have them take that effect. Is this not the case? Obviously, if they start their turn there they get the effect, but not when they are initially moved into the area.

I love using powerful entities from other media as inspiration for my Great Old One patron or patrons. Like my sorlock spell sniper that is bound to and contracted with the Hanged King, the Four Masked Dukes, and the Outer City of Alagadda itself. The city of Alagadda is very straightforward; it wants you to kill things so it can absorb their souls through your spells to sustain and grown itself. The Four Dukes, each a powerful eldritch entity in their own right, want you to do things for them, and will give you boons when you do well, and banes if you fuck up or snub them to many times. The Hanged King is the Big Omnipotent Elder God in the background that you know exists but you don't exactly know what it wants.
