How To Plant Narcissus Bulbs, How To Plant Daffodil Bulbs, Get Gardening
Bulbs make great additions to the garden, with Species such as Narcissus, Tulips, Snowdrops and Crocus helping to provide much needed colour to the garden in the winter and early spring months.
Tools required:
Hand trowel or hand fork.
Despite seeming like strange mystical things to plant, bulbs are really easy and don’t require much gardening skill in order to get results.
Some bulbs will naturalise, producing clumps of flowers over time, where as other types always seem to produce solitary flowers so select the type of bulbs that will produce the desired look for the garden.
The key thing with bulbs is to select and purchase as large a size of bulb as are available at reasonable costs. Make sure the bulbs are firm and not showing any signs of mould or rot.
Check the packaging of the bulbs to determine the best planting position, sun, shade, moist or well drained. If the bulbs are to go in containers then make sure the correct compost is used, with good drainage being provided.
As a general rule, bulbs are planted to a depth that is 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb to be planted.
When planting, it always looks better and more natural to plant in odd numbers. Either dig the individual planting hole or dig out a larger section in one go. Put the soil that has been dug out to one side. Put the bulb in the hole. With conical type bulbs then the narrow tip should be upmost. With flatter corms and bulbs then the hollow section tends to be the part that goes downwards in the planting hole.
Once bulbs have been spaced out, as per packaging guidelines, then they can be gradually covered over with soil.
I tend to half cover the bulbs before forming the soil around the bulbs. This method is a little slower but does ensure that pockets of air are removed. Removing air pockets ensures that water won’t settle in in the voids, which will lead to root and bulb rot.
After firming the soil, continue to cover the remainder of the bulbs and finish by firming again.
Once finished, place some markers next to the planted bulbs to act as a reminder of what is buried below the soil surface.
Wait for spring and enjoy the colour that will be produced.

Thanks for the short to point video with great video work. Enjoyed your relaxed manner on my rainy February morning. I can't wait for Spring to come. I would like to see how they look now after 3 years, I bet it's a mass spectacle for the eyes.

Enjoyable video to watch, thanks for the insight and showing how to plant them. I've set a bunch of king alfred trumpet daffodil bulbs at the beginning of September in a circular cluster around a cherry blossom tree in the garden, hoping they'll show up for the first year of growth next spring...

Hi Darragh. Thanks for watching and your message. King Alfred has such bold flowers so should put on a great show for you, with flowers that coincide time wise with those from your cherry tree. A nice addition to the garden. All the best 🌸

Thankyou for a well spoken, chilled and informative video. Love the use of lingo, really helps to build that familiarity and rejog the memory. Haha yes we never remember, I completely forgot about my bulbs and am off to give them some soil as they’re growing in my cupboard 🤭😂 oops. Little feedback I noticed at start, when talking about seasons could you add what hemisphere your in, could help with a little confusion however I also don’t recommend one source of info to be all there’s is to know! we have lots of passion and someone always has more time and experience to share on their interests. Such is the beauty of learning. Stay fab ✌️💜

I've always been confused about the depth to plant - is it measured to the tip of the bulb or the start of the roots?

Planting depth is roughly twice total bulb length above the bulb you are planting. Something like a daff will end up being at a depth of 20 cm
