Thank you Dr. Paul, this is very helpful! It will also be very clarifying to see a real example of a psychology essay plan making - that would be fab!! maybe next video? English is not my first language and it's most often a challenge at the time of writing and plan it in a cohesive way...Thank you!

I am currently doing a music psychology essay on Pinker’s claim that “Music is auditory cheesecake.” I have to do a critical evaluation. Whilst I’m very excited about doing this. The anxiety before starting an essay is so crippling.

Feeling ovewhelmed by an essay is often the result of one or both of two things 1) Not understanding what the question is getting at (which means you have no idea where to start) 2) Not having a plan of attack (which makes the task seem overwhelming because of the number of ways it could be tackled). The trick here is to understand the proposition being made by the quote, which I think (but check with the person who set the essay title) is along the lines of 'music is an evolutionary byproduct of other evolved faculties e.g. language'. Then understand what's being asked of you. Look at different perspectives and their associated evidence and make a judgement about each one's strength (i.e. critically evaulate). Once you understand this it's just a matter of planning to address a few lines of argument (with evidence) "for" and "against" the proposition that music is a byproduct of other evolved faculties (suggest devoting a paragraph to each new line of argument) then having a closing part of the essay that makes a determination as to whether the propostion is supported given the strength of the arguments made on both sides. Good luck with the essay! :-)
