Sara literally does this at 5:07 in the video. She just doesn't vocalize why.
I like snipping a tall shoot and then snipping it a couple more times. Then you can plant them all in the soil and you now have more plants, all from one single cutting from the main plant.
More sideshoots means more flowers. I get it. Awesome thank you!

Thank you very very much for your clip. I just started to plant cosmos this year. It is my first experience. Cant wait to enjoy their flowers. They are 3 inches high now.
My cosmos have reseeded for almost 25 yrs with no help. They were my dad's seeds originally. Brilliant orange. I have to, on average, cull btwn 100-200 seedlings every spring. All in a 10x10 ft area. They invade other gardens, as well. Zone 7a Tennessee. Never known anyone to plant actual starts. Same with zinnias...just throw the seeds on the ground and walk away. Yours are very beautiful!
Yes Sara, do this. 😀 I am in mid-autumn here in Melbourne Australia. I have several clumps of tall (around four feet) white cosmos starring in the garden, presently. I planted groups of around five cosmos next to each other in late spring last year and pinched out the growing tips as suggested. The plants then bushed out and grew into wonderful clump formations. I have had to stake them strategically here and there to stop the wind knocking the stems over. Also I have been deadheading any torn or finished flowers. Once a week I have used liquid flower fertiliser on them to keep them flowering well. Eventually theses plants will succumb to the forthcoming winter cold. However until then, they will keep looking amazing. Cosmos are an amazing plant. I have never tried keeping the seed. Perhaps I should try it.

Good to know . My Cosmos because I don't know I can pinch them , they grow like 8 feet. I was wondering what to do . I love the flowers but I don't want them to shade my tomatoes. Usually I sow them in July and have flowers in fall . Is my way to said goodbye to my garden. This spring I had few volunteers and this video is the answer to my problem. I was laughing because your description about people leaving their plants grow tall is was just like me.

Completely off topic but I’m a native Scot (Scottish) and when I started listening to you, I heard a few words that sounded *exactly* like how people from my town speak 😂🙌🏻 Scotland has a long history with the Scandinavian countries and so I already knew that many Gaelic or Scots words are the same as Swedish, *but* it was interesting to hear your accent and pick up on a Scottish-sounding twang to it 😝 (or maybe Scots have a Swedish twang? 🤔🤷♀️😂)

@@gailthornbury291 Certain areas of Northern Ireland (especially north of Ballymena) have accents almost identical to lowland/central Scots 🤓 Like most Scots-Irish, especially catholic, I have family spread out between Scotland and Ireland, but in particular, my family up near Bushmills speak near identical to Glaswegian Scots 😂👌🏻 Since it’s so close to Scotland up that end, I’m sure over the centuries, people went back and forth between the two places and the accent has mixed 🤓

Yes, I think that would work fine! Best of luck! 😊
When you say cut it above the second set of leaves, do you mean the first set is the cotyledons and cut it after the second set of leaves which are also the first true leaves? Also, how often do you do this? Just once?
Well. My cosmos were direct sowed onto the ground and are now a foot tall. It may hurt me a little to cut them at this point, but at least I can take the cuttings!

I desperately want to grow cosmos but my seedlings are so thin and spindly. I got a grow light for them but they still aren't thickening up. Do you have any advice?
Can I pinch cosmos that have already flowered? They are about 5” tall and flowered. I bought them already started at a garden center, so I’m not sure if they had already been pinched or not.
Thank you for sharing this! I’ve not thought to prune annuals. However, I’m curious, will they still grow tall? Their height is one of many reasons I enjoy growing cosmos.

I started two varieties indoors - a multi color and another that's shades of yellow, orange and gold. Now that they are blooming outside, the yellow shades are flowering very well, but the pinks and white mix are mostly just thick and bushy foliage with no flowers. They have very thick stems too. Is there something I can do to get them to bloom?

Can you pinch Coreopsis verticillata?
I keep hearing Cosmos don't need much water and are super draught tolerant. Based on this advice, I planted mine in grow bags with excellent drainage and well draining soil. However, if they go even a day or two in the PNW summer without watering they get dramatic and start drooping heavily. As soon as they are watered, they perk right up. Why is that?
