Strange as this may sound. . . . buying an Epiphone LP cheapo to begin learning at 81. Started music at 7 or 8 years old and gave up everything in mid teens. Have been reviewing videos while waiting for delivery and found this to be the most significant for starting at ground zero. I actually tried picking on a borrowed guitar a couple of years ago and could not feel like I was making any progress. This lesson will give me a foundation to start fresh.

Awesome presentation. I think often picking is taken for granted, so it's not learned well. But it's an important fundamental guitar skill. 5 stars for presenting this in detail.

Really great video, thank you for making this - I’m a bit frustrated because after a year of playing I’ve realised I haven’t had my hand attached to the guitar and thats why I’ve made so many mistakes, I just hope I won’t lose loads of progress by trying a new technique - if you have any advice please do let me know, thank you again !!!

A year isn't long in this game at all and it's better to correct it now than later. I've also got this video which may help -m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/h5x_tNGpeMy5pLg.html And also a workshop for some of the most common sticking points for guitarists- www.scottguitarteacher.com/

Useful advice about anchoring the hand and choosing a reference point. As a complete beginner my hand hovers above the strings and I need to constantly look down to locate the position of them and the pick. One question ... do you recommend up or down strokes when strumming chords?

  • @ScottGuitarist

Start with down to get control but you'll want to aim to combine both for an interesting strum pattern. This video may help - m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWGApsOSkanHaLQ.html

Thank you! I will definitely look into it. I often explore singing the notes while I play, it's really good to develop aural awareness. Thanks again for the sub :)

One issue I'm not sure of, everyone says practise perfectly, and I try but even if I go really slow I still miss the fret or hit the wrong string sometimes. Like every 10 notes I'll probably make a mistake, sometimes it's better or worse than that. I feel like I've made progress but I still make those same mistakes. Will it just clear up eventually if I keep going? I don't wanna learn wrong notes by hitting wrong notes but I can't seem to avoid it.

I compare it to speaking. I've been speaking English all my life and practice every day but I'll still trip over my tongue and get my words mixed up in certain situations. I think it's natural not to get everything perfect. The more you practice, the less frequent those mistakes will be but they will always be there. Unless you have ALOT of time to dedicate to it

Thank You so much!I figure out some problem of my picking.Teacher Scott I have some question.Do you use the flat surface of the pick to play the strings? Or tilt the pick slightly and use the intersection of the edge and the flat surface to play the strings? There is a difference in guitar tone between the two. Can you tell me which one is correct?Your lessoni is more helpful than justinguitar etc.. these youtuber

I'll do a video to respond properly (sometimes I can't get my point across with just a comment) But it's different depending on the purpose. I angle it slightly to graze over the top of the string when tremollo picking. For most other picking stroke styles I'll keep it fairly flat against the string.

The best way to correct those mistakes is by pointing them out, each person has different mistakes, and i think Scott has showed every correct position after every mistake he mentioned!

Good instruction although I found it annoying that he wouldnt call the "plectrom"(sp?) a pick.
