How to Photograph Small Birds: Camera Settings & Techniques (Advanced)

I'm sharing all the tricks I've learnt over the years for small bird photography. Learn how I use composition, focusing techniques and camera settings to get perfectly sharp images of perching birds. This tutorial is for more advanced and serious bird photographers. In this video I'm using a Canon 1DX and EF 500mm f4 Mark i lens, sometimes with a 25mm Extension tube.

    good point on putting the focus point at subject head height. i use the focus lock then move for crows, being mostly black it can be a bit slow to focus on them if they big in frame so i use their legs or body to sky contrast then move to their head. with a 400mm i have used 2x25 canon tubes and 2x 2converters separated with a 13mm and got 5xmacro, fills the frame (crop sensor) with the Queens eye on a 20 pound note, needs lots of light though so best leave the f'kery to the studio :). i was recently practicing over my local park shooting any birds in flight, when i got home i was surprised and pleased to see one of the distant birds i got was a jay.

    Hi Paul, thanks for the good tips and excellent work. I am a professional Cameraman and amateur photographer and wildlife and birding are my hobbies. Birding is a recent hobby and I have a lot of fun. I am currently using the mft system, specifically the Lumix GH5 + Leica 100-400, and am about to buy the new Olympus em1 m3 + Oly 300mm f4. I love portability, robustness, handling and the results are fantastic. I have been a Cameraman for over 15 years, and in that time I went from the huge shoulder camcorders to the Cameras system, including mft, and although with some commitment here or there, in general the results were the same or better, but with huge gain in the logistics issue and the weight of the necessary equipment. The move was a path of no return! I don't miss the old big an heavy equipament. That said, my question to you is this: Do you consider the use of FF Cameras fundamental for obtaining optimal results? In the specific case of pictures of small birds how do you evaluate the performance of the mft system? Have you tried the system? Greetings from the Black Forest and thanks again for the good tips.

    Aps-c is a great way to go for birds and wildlife due to the crop factor. For any lens you get more reach...and light gathering isn't as big of a problem as most wildlife is shot in the Daytime...though early morning and dusk can have some issues depending on your rig. I've never got to shoot with a micro four thirds...always been curious

    Thanks for sharing, I could use it for photographing the local kingfishers. They are very camera shy so I will have to gain their trust a bit to get closer for pictures. I have the sigma 100-400 on my full frame 6D mk.2 Minimum focus distance 1.6 meters is ok, getting pretty macro-like pictures at 400 mm and 1.6 meters, filling the frame with a butterfly perfectly

    Thanks for that video, Paul. I was wondering why you focus and recompose when your camera has several cross-type focus points. I also find that AI-Servo works better in this situation, I get more frames in focus. I'm very particular that the eye of the bird is sharp.

    The annoying thing is they don't have enough focus points - they don't really go that far out from the middle. A lot of people use servo, I generally prefer to lock the focus.

    Hello Paul, Amazing video as always, inspires us intermediate photographers like me to learn and understand more about getting the images right. I have few questions below would love to hear your answers. 1. Could you suggest a good budget tripod for bird photography. 2. What are your thoughts on post processing and any videos from you which would explain about background noise reduction and sharpening? 3. I see you getting very sharp results with canon 400mm f5.6 but I don't get that great sharpness especially of smaller birds, is it mandatory to use support for shooting small birds with 400m f5.6, and since i hand held it i loose on sharpness? 4. Also i own a Canon 80D, Are full frame bodies more sharper in image quality?

  • @PaulMiguelPhotography

    @PaulMiguelPhotography

    Thank you very much. I'm not sure about budget tripod but I would look at manfrotto. I hand-hold often with the 400mm lens. I do think full frame bodies give better image quality. I'm not intending to do anything on post-processing.. I don't do a lot.

    Thanks for the video .. Usually how far away you’re from these birds ? I wish you talked about this because it very important, depending on resolution of the camera and focal length there should be some knows ranges I guess .. I use A7r iv with 60mp and 100-400 GM lens, shutter at 1/500 but the birds small in the frame.. and even with cropping still struggling sometimes to get sharp images for small birds although I’m about 10 meters away .. does the extra 200mm will help if add TC ? and how far I should be I general

    Another good vid. One thing you did not mention was the restricted focus range when using the extension tubes. Alright for set-ups where you are not going to need to focus at a greater distance but if something you want to capture should come near at a greater distance, you could miss it. The details with the 500mm lens are. 12mm tube 3.856 to 21.193mts, with the 25 its 3.391 to 10.778mts. Hope this helps. Although I have full frame cameras, the 6D is good in low light/high ISO, for social media etc an APC body with a 1.4 extender on my 500 gives much more reach for non hide situations and birds at distance.

    Wow, great video! Really informative, glad I found your channel. I have a question about your ISO. I noticed that you use quite high ISO, which can be often essential with little birds as they love flitting around in low light areas.. is noise an issue in your pics though ? Or does your camera handle noise ok? I have a mark 7D ii which doesn’t always handle high iso well but I can’t afford a high end camera so it can be frustrating at times trying to strike the right balance with lighting.. I often am stuck having to go quite low with shutter speeds which means a lot of blurry pics. Any advice?

  • @PaulMiguelPhotography

    @PaulMiguelPhotography

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's always difficult. I don't like going much above 1250 really, but 2000 can be o.k. - the noise largely comes from the background so the best thing you can do is try to shoot against a really clean background. Tip - light backgrounds will show less noise!

    Shutterspeed at faster speeds are fine for static perfectly sharp images. But not a hard and fast rule, blur images of birds in flight can be very effective and give an indication of movement in a otherwise static image. I've photographed in flight birds with Canon's 600mm f4 i.s. at 1/60 of a second f8. with pleasing results. Tripod benro TMA47AXL and a gimbal head. Expermentation is one of life's greatest thrills in photography.

    Does lens size have an impact on shutter speed? I'm shooting on a 300mm and if I dip anything below 1/1000 (1/800 at a push) then I get serious twitch blur from the tiny fidgets of small birds. How are you able to get this down so low?

  • @PaulMiguelPhotography

    @PaulMiguelPhotography

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's not so much lens size - but more how close you are. The bigger the bird in the frame the more problematic is the movement. If the birds are more relaxed it will be easier - and I tend to shoot at a high frame rate too.

In my experience with the 6D and 7Dii I have to pre-focus manually. Which is a bit of a pain/time consuming as there is of trial and error involved. Tnx for sharing and in advance for any answers. Hey Paul. I just picked up a 1DX. I was used to using the 1D mark IV. For running large animals towards you, like dogs, do you recommend still using the one small focus point with no surrounding points or do you think the one point with the 4 around it would yield better results? I’m going to be shooting running dogs at me and panning across me from the sides. Also, is case 1 the best one to leave it on, or do you think case 4 is better? What about tracking sensitivity? I was wondering if you have any feedback for larger subjects? Thanks.
