In this video Ian takes a tried and tested beauty light set-up and replicates it, but with a twist. Simply by adding a modifier to that set up, Ian creates a more dramatic yet still beautiful effect. It is easy to achieve and can be used with two lights or even just the one! Ian gives you precise details on the power of the lights and the equipment that you might need for this portrait. In this video he sets about explaining the settings of the lights and camera to ensure that your photography kicks off to a winning start.
The goal here is to see if a set up that would be used for mostly females can be utilised for men yet still be dramatic and beautiful in one!
I saw Rafal Wegiel use this set up to great effect and he inspired me to try. His work can be seen here

Thanks a lot Geraldine. Your comments and the time you've spent here has made me proud. I'm happy even if one person enjoys one solitary thing. I don't know everything and often it's trial and error so I think people prefer to see the mistakes too.
Great video! Thanks for making it and for sharing. I'll try this straight away. Like you, I prefer the the second setup with the gridded lights. Gez looks like he can't wait to grab the war hammer and repel the Viking invaders. Cheers!

Ha! Thanks so much for dropping by and commenting. You're right, Gez really is that type of guy too 🤣
Thanks Ian, I'll try this setup which is quite close to my standard setup for male portraits. I like to add a very small amount of light on my hand painted backdrop, to show some texture back there...

Hey 👋 hope things are good. You are right there, and I was thinking of another low powered light kicking back. I appreciate you dropping by, it gives me cause to continue making videos 👍
Thanks for sharing this ian... i like them both. with grid and without.... but i think one thing to consider is how dark you want your background to be.

Absolutely right there 👏 by adding the grid directs the light away from the backdrop. I suppose you could add a kicker to the backdrop. Cheers for dropping by I appreciate it 🙏🏻
Good one Ian

Cheers David 🍻 hope you're well.
Great demo! I personally like the first version without grids. I think that the grid of the rim light prevented the light from hitting the model, who is now lit by reflections from the black grid only, giving some grey charcoal touch to his face on his left side, while the right side is warmer. Furthermore, the model isn't seperated from the background now, especially his upper hair. -Mino

Hi Nick, hope you're well. Thanks for dropping by and yes I agree 👍
I prefer the gridded versions- For a male portrait like that. I will try something similar with a female and compare the results 👍🏼

Hey Ian, you did a great job again. Beautiful man! But... Will there be a part 2? I mean, the edits of both images is very nice. Could you perhaps tell us next time how you did that?

Hey Bert, I hope you're well, my friend. I can do it if you like, but the only difference is the grids on the front.
