How to Photograph Like Jay Maisel

Jay Maisel is one of the most prolific photographers of our time. He’s photographed everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Miles Davis. But it’s his 70+ years of street photography he’s perhaps most recognized for.
After recently watching the 2018 documentary, Jay Myself, I had to learn more about how to observe and shoot like Jay Maisel. Hopefully this video can help you do the same.

I had the pleasure of meeting him at Photoshop World in 2013. His presentation was 2 hours. At the hour mark he asked if we would like to take a break. No one wanted to. He is an excellent speaker. We were all mesmerized.

This was really well done, thank you for creating and sharing it! I’ve been a fan of Jay since discovering him in the late 70’s in the pages of American Photo magazine. His eye has always been one worthy of emulation in my view. The documentary ‘Jay Myself’ was a treat! Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing, he inspired me many years ago, having the same background in art/painting I understand his attraction to color with strong light on it, it helps of course when you have a subject entering the scene

Super video! Growing up I was a big fan of Pete Turner and Eric Meola who shot in a similar color drenched way. Kodachrome played a big part and they often duped Kodachrome on Kodachrome to heighten the saturation and contrast. Would’ve been interesting to shoot Ektar for that added bit of color. Nice set.

5:18 It's not a dx, it's a full frame 28-300 lens that he shoots with, but I'm sure you know that cause you actually got the lens yourself :). Good video btw

Didn't you learn anything from Jay Maisel making this? If you want to shoot like Jay, then you go out empty. Planning a route of where you are going (Brooklyn bridge and Chinatown) and looking for something (light) is the exact opposite of what he is trying to teach you.

Maybe. Maybe not. I think Maisel was talking about going out to the street and be open to what it is showing you. I doubt Maisel regularly walked out of the bank and just walked anywhere. Sometimes he’d go to the roof of the bank and make photographs. When I walk the streets I look for interesting looking people or people doing interesting things. Jay would say I’ve narrowed my vision. Maybe seeing an interesting wall with good light should be as important as interesting people. Stay open and you will see it. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
