    Well presented man. I've seen it so many times where some guy on a forum or group would be telling a guy that they needed to add a degree shim on a leaf pack after lifting or lowering a truck, then the guy wonders why it's vibrating and wearing out u-joints. A few measurements of angles and getting things where the need to be is the right approach.

    Thank you! This is the best explaination I've found. Tell us what happens if you drive a vehicle with the angles off and vibrating at 65 mpn?

  • @TheDeadwood11

    It's about timing, if you have a vibration then the joints are out of time. Time is adjusted by angles and even quantities of joints. The front axel shaft ujoints always chirping the tires in tight turns is the acceleration and deacceleration required as the joint rotates. There is a great video on ujoints and their timing. So 3 joints will be out of sink via the single phase joint if the pinion is not in line with the shaft.

    Hi. On the front drive shaft with live axle I have come across a issue. Do I favour the castor angle over the pinion angle with a double cardan drive shaft? With the castor angle at 5 degrees for good steering it leaves the pinion angle out by 3.5 degrees with a 2 inch lift. I have short drive shafts. Good thing I only engage the front while going slow when off roading. Cheers Phil.

    About to re do my peterbilt driveline.. 2 piece between transmission and axle with a mid ship between the differentials.. do the axle angle and rear of the driveline off transmission have to be pointed both up sat 2 degrees or can one be up and other down? And do you know about what the midship should be set at

  • @dandorris8531
    @dandorris8531 Жыл бұрын

    Umm pinion angles are to be measured at static ride height. You should have had that truck sitting on the ground. The weight of the truck on the ground is what I've always been taught. Total angles should be with in 1 degree opposite operating and never even. Example trans down 3 degrees axle pinion up 3 degrees as they will cancel each other under load to prevent vibration also keep joints lubricating itself.

  • @treykish

    @treykish

    Жыл бұрын

    With the 3 link properly set up the pinion angle relative to the ground won’t change throughout the travel, and the transmission side to the ground won’t either. The angles going thought the u joints themselves will change but they will still be matched, so in this case it can be set in the air just fine. I would double check it on the ground, but more to make sure that the U joint angles aren’t zero at ride height. With measuring the angles, you want them on the same plane, so 3° trans down and 3° pinion up are the same angle, since they’re pointing in opposite directions the ‘negative angle’ of the tranny is only because it’s pointing backwards, if that makes sense

  • @dandorris8531

    @dandorris8531

    @@treykish Somewhat agree as i've not dealt with 3 link, Don't think He mentioned this was for three link only adjustment. I did mention 3 up and 3 down. Still would think pinion angle will change base on suspension load weight of truck on the ground but maybe not on this truck as rear weight is basically not a whole lot.

    @@treykish exactly! As the axle moves up, the pinion stays at the same angle so the transmission and axle will always be at the same angle

    Chevy s10 extended cab with 4 inch lowering blocks need what - well its a “double-cardan” style U-joints style so a 3/4 inch riser for transmission and 1 inch riser under the center support bearing is needed. But my question is, the blocks need to be at an angle right? Maybe I have 3 inch drop blocks I'll have to check again, but if it's a 3 inch drop block, I should have to use a 4° angle shim on top of the drop blocks with the thinner side of the shim going toward the front of the truck on both sides right? Can't go any higher or if I hit a bump the driveshaft will hit the floor of the cab unless you hammer out some of the floor of the cab. But a 4° angle shim should work for 3 inch and 4 inch drop blocks correct? Man I hope this all makes sense lol! 😂

    I actually had absolutely no idea this was even a thing. Just to be clear, let’s say you are changing or upgrading to a different driveshaft, should you always do this measuring procedure? I can’t say a changed driveshafts while working with my father, but if you were to ask me how do you change a driveshaft I would answer “u pop off a few bolts, add the new one and done”
