Thanks for sharing. I am learner driver and is struggling with acting appropriately when something pops while driving. My instructor told me that I need to plan before driving and anticpate what can happen and what I will do if those things happen. Fantastic stuff Reg - the explanation of the routine for observations from the far distance thru middle, near, far, sides and rear is great and drawing out those key elements from Roadcraft such as T.U.G. and what you can see, what you can't see and what you can reasonably expect is really nicely done. The point about driving plans being simple and straightforward is also really useful to bring out. This has made me think not only about my own driving but as a tutor how I might plan a series of drives for an Associate to prepare them for test. I'm sure other observers/tutors will have found it useful too. Thanks for braving the Cumbrian weather for us!

Another great video, very clear and explained with real live examples. Excellent. A quick question: presumably I should include the dashboard in my scanning? To check speed, revs, gear, driver aids, engine temperature, for lights working and for any car alerts. Any comments on how often to do that?

Great video and very helpful to hear your commentary. I find it really hard to vocalise the plans I'm making, and I tend to get fixated on a plan for the nearest hazard instead of asking "is there a more important hazard in the distance?". I guess a lot of people struggle with this. In Tom Toppers old and irreverent book (is everyone else too young to have read it?), his plans include thinking about escape routes in case the unlikely worst case scenario actually happens. eg., if there is a jump jet landing in the middle of the road (or a bank robber making a getaway), is there a grass verge you could use to avoid the big impact? No one seems to mention this at ROSPA... why?

15:00 Would it be appropriate to flash your high beams or even use the horn to warn the driver of the approaching vehicle? Or would it potentially confuse him as he would think it means "I let you get out of the car" or "I let you pull out". Pedestrians wouldn't get confused in this one, since there were none.
