How to Parallel Process (Production Tutorial)

Hi fam! In this episode I teach you how to parallel process your tracks in Ableton: what it is, how to use it, and the different kinds in Ableton Live. The two main methods of parallel processing are with return tracks and racks. I'll walk you through and explain when we would want to use either one to process our signal in parallel. Parallel processing is awesome for when you want to bring up a wet signal without reducing the dry, to help with general ease and CPU load by using a singular instance of an audio effect, and to process the dry and wet signals seperately. Enjoy!

I’ve been mixing and mastering for a minute now. I just watch these videos bc I’m kind of a geek. That being said , you are an amazing teacher. Your analogies and metaphors put into seconds what took me years to learn and figure out. Good content. Love your stuff.

that's so sweet to hear!! thank you JN! And that is definitely my hope, all the things I present to y'all in my tutorials are also things that took me forever to get a hang of, but when I realized I could sum it all up way simpler, I just wanted to start sharing it. glad you're benefiting!

At 5:50 when you explain why you use return tracks for delay and not racks. You can do the same in racks if you put a utility in front of the delay on the chain and turn the gain down on the utility to -inf and back up to capture that exact phrase you want to effect. It works the exact way you were doing it with the return, but with a utility gain knob instead. It has to be in front of the effect though not after it.

This was deeply helpful! I only watched this like 3x and took notes. It sounds like the 3 biggest differences btwn return tracks VS racks are: 1. You can't automate in racks at all. Is that correct? Versus with Return tracks you can automate as you please. 2. Racks are visually just easier to work with. 3. Return tracks are economical when it comes to CPU vs racks but only if you use outside plugins. Good to know. Thank you!

so glad this was helpful for you! 1. You totally can automate racks! It's just that specifically for automating delay I use return tracks b/c you can automate the amount of volume being sent to the return track, and then keep hearing the returned signal even after you stop sending signal (this is a little hard to explain typing, but i'm happy to show you after class some time if you want!) 2. Yes definitely so for me! 3. Yep! ☺

So much good stuff here. Especially the sidechaining of vocal reverbs to their source (essential!). That’s a great trick for adding ambiance to other sounds too, while avoiding loss of definition in the dry signal. Keep up the great tutorials. These are so clear and easy to follow. Thank you!

I've been a big user of send returns and always have 11 favourite ready to go with one spare. Some people ignore these and prefer just racks but you showed the advantage clearly of send returns in this video. Your explanation with water simile was great. Kind of sad there are only 12 sends. I've seen a good tutorial about using autotune on some of the delays and reverbs sends and would love to have more options then 12 as I have so many full. Good tutorial.

Dude Ableton should add some damn numbers on the sends fr fr, also how do you automate and or figure out how to equalize volume on the send a with the delays? Every-time I send my vocal to a delay send it also increases the volume of the vocal. Thx

Hey Alli, I'm tryna get ableton to add the colors of the return tracks to the sends! I think that would be real helpful. Hm... are you making sure your return track's delay is set to 100% wet? There's no reason why your original vocal track should get louder when sent to a delay return track.
