Excellent Alexandra, thank you for sharing your work. I was born in République Démocratique of Congo. We have been staying now in Johannesburg since 1994. Good luck with your amazing work. I do Oils painting, and I want to add some gold leaf or other colours leafs .

I am in awe with this woman, both because of her humanitarian work and her mission and as an artist. Her painting is uniquely outstanding, exquisite is an understatement! It is interesting to see that while she is working she is also teaching the technique of applying gold leaf and its various steps! And yes, only having been and especially lived in Africa does one know what it is all about!

What an inspiring and beautiful soul! Such a vibrant light for a world in desperate need of them. This is art at it's best, exquisitely created and far reaching in it's blessing. So inspired, thank you!

gold leaf is very interesting to use. as a hand painted signwriter i have used it a lot in the last 30 years. you can apply it in many ways but if you apply it neatly you can also use a soft rag and lightly swirl it in different directions to give different texture, patterns and light reflections from different angles (as it is very soft)

"Wowz yowza!" She is gorgeous, and brilliant too. That's just not fair. I normally have a prejudice toward flashy art of this sort, but not these. Fabulous, and I'm so happy such a lovely person who loves wildlife, and nature passionately as I do is successful. There is justice in the world sometimes. I think I just fell in love with acrylics. Ready for a trip to Kenya as well.

I loved this show, only just watched this episode, don't know how I missed it. I have only just started playing around with gold leaf in my paintings. Finding it hard to get hold of the sizing in large amounts. I noticed Alexandra had a large bottle, Where did she get that from??? Need to know. Hopefully Sydney somewhere.(I buy my gold leaf on ebay) Thanks so much for this wonderful program. I have been watching off and on for a while and it has inspired me to start painting again...Thanks so much,...I too am a breast cancer survivor like Alexandra. I can't believe she had it in 1995 as she said...how old is Alex, she looks so young...Love her art...awesome.

Like breathing wildness. Loved it! On working with the leaf...has anyone had a good experience with varnish? I just used golden gloss polymer varnish on my metallic drip painting (liquid leaf in brass, silver, and florentine gold) and the varnish seemed to suck the 3d life right out of it. It looked like liquid luck...

Hi Sue, I'm pretty sure Alexandra uses Damar varnish to seal the pictures , it works on the gold leaf and the paint

Damar as an oil base sealant and Kolner leaf Protect as an acrylic sealant

the first one i've seen with paint on thier cloths i always end up with paint on my cloths

Please, please, please Graeme could you let me know where Alexandra gets her different coloured metal leaf from? Silver, gold, bronze is easy to get but those different coloured leaf sheets I can't source anywhere!! I regularly watch CIYL now, its fab. Thank you

The glue is called GOLD SIZING....late reply!!

Is she using genuine gold and silver leafing or is she using the imitation metals..I think I missed that if they said it.

please help ,,,i need to know how to seal the metal leaf can i spray it right over my whole painting can i get the sealer on my acrylic paint ..What does she do to seal her art helppppp

You can use Damar varnish heather, it is just as good as any thing else, Graeme

Yes i do....i have shown my work in New York and Miami..and plan exhibitions again for Miami in the post corona fiuture!! its now 2020 and a very late reply!!

Dear Graeme, did Alexandra specify what kind (which brand) of varnish she is using? Does it protect the gilding from tarnishing? Thanks in advance.

Any adhesive size or sizing glue does the job. Winsor and Newton have a good one.

many artists these days wear thin rubber gloves to prevent absorption of potentially toxic materials from all paints and residual dusts. It is so important to be knowledgeable about health and safety for all artists and crafts people no matter what materials are being used. It is part of being professional about your work even if the end results are beautiful. Health is so important and once that is lost not even beautiful work can replace or repair it. She is also working barefoot and is absorbing stuff via her feet stepping into residual powder etc so max skin to material exposure goes on it seems from her videos. Love her work though.

Gypsy SnickerDoodle Yep. This is Metal Leaf and not Gold Leaf. You can tell by the size of the sheets she used. Real Gold Leaf sheets only come in very small squares or thin rolls.

There it is again, repetitive pattern with variation. 🤗

This art don't touch, don't affect myself. Sorry!

Painting with hands can't be safe (I cringed watching that...and the powder and then leaf remains)....if we want to know what caused "it". Maybe that's something to stop. Especially metallics, even if they are acrylic and so-called "non-toxic". Have they tested these paints on everyone? We're all different, some of us more susceptible. Great results though.

riteasrain genuine gold is actually injected by some arthritis sufferers. My Aunt died with massive arthritis, -in the end, it settled into her ribcage, so she couldn't breathe- & had monthly hold injections. Whether it helped or no? I tend towards the 'depression kills' school of psychocognition treatments: Chronic-acute disease suffering & Dying is nobody's business but the patient.
