How To Paint Watercolour Landscapes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was a little out of my comfort zone painting these cottages on the hillside. It was very much a case of trial and error as I attempted to make sense of the scene.

NOTHING wrong with your composition. The cottages are just right - very rustic. Charming.

great! shadows or not, your looseness is your style and applies to everything i feel. i am so loving it, looks to me your "comfort zone" was perfect. i am a beginner painter and will probably always be but do enjoy it. one thing, i think i heard you say that you bought your paper in packs. i have seen others inquire about the paper you use and i'm another. i cannot find your exact paper here in the u.s.a. and diligently looking. i know you are not set up to sell painting supplies (yet) but i am one that would gladly pay your price and any overseas shipping cost to obtain your paper. some fabriano paper is available here but your 130lb with that particular texture i have not seen and certainly will keep looking. take care and thank you so much for what you do.

many thanks for your comments William. It's a shame they don't ship abroad. I've seen similar paper that's 140lb that in theory should be better as it's a little thicker so try that if you see it. I wish you all the best with your watercolours. Keep practising and very best of luck.

The entire painting works very well as it is an excellent outcome of the technique you employ so masterfully. I see in it a unique representation of a small and secluded village. You use your artistic license to my delight!

Very beautiful painting, you do a really good job by scratching the painting to make the houses. It is a really good and useful technique for so many shapes!. Thanks for sharing!

Your page has a beautiful mixture of colors. Two of the clouds have the shape of lips smiling, but fortunately you put some paint over them. You are doing some white clouds using tissue paper. Beautiful little houses. By the way Steven, if you want to correct something on these houses, what do you do ? One red roof would be nice and a contrast with all these dark colors. Do you like the idea ? Lovely painting Steven and I thank you for that and all the demos very interesting as usual.

+Mireille Romain yes I think a little variety in the roofs may have been a good idea. I think to correct the Houses afterwards may be difficult because you may see the marks where the paper was scraped with the card.

You're right, the light does seem to be coming from two different directions, but weirdly it works anyway.

Really great picture Steve. I have a quick question. What sized mount do you use when showing your pictures at the end of the video's?

  • @StevenCronin

+Si Taylor thanks for watching. The mount is 20 by 16 inches with a 14 by 10 inch aperture.

Great videos Steven! I love this painting. I am just starting to dab into watercolour (or painting itself to be precise) and I am glad to have found your channel. I do have a question if you allow me. Your technique is very different from the other watercolour artists I have seen. You seem to favour heavy paint in your brush strokes. I do not see a milky mixture except when you do the base washes. When the whole painting has dried, does the paint add a textured look to the painting (a bit like oil paintings)?

  • @StevenCronin

+Ali Hoolash it would look more textured if I was using the paint neat from the tubes and adding it more in dollops but I use it dry on the palette so don't really get the textured look. I wish you the very best of luck with your watercolour painting. Keep practicing and very best wishes
