How to Paint Watercolor - My Secrets to Learning to Paint Anything (even on the Kitchen Table)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is the first of a new occasional series of videos I'm calling 'Saturday Secrets', in which I share inside tips with you about where I find my inspiration, how I come up with new ideas, and why I spend time learning new techniques in order to keep my own artistic journey moving forward. Today, for the first of the series, I'm going to show you what I've done so far in my '365 Days of Art in Nature' book and how I set myself up to paint from the kitchen table this week while I'm away from my studio.
My materials for today were:
365 Days of Art in Nature by Lorna Scobie amzn.to/3A5PP5U
A Gallo Signature 1 & 2 Set of handmade watercolors
(especially Harbor Blue, Forest Green, Deep Sea Green for the sheep)
Drawell Maestro brushes (more details below)
...
In all my watercolor tutorials, I show you a simple painting for beginners in detail and in real time. By painting along you will learn all the techniques you need to create amazing art. Your watercolor skills will improve quickly when you practice these easy paintings! Whether you want to paint bookmarks, greetings cards, embellishments for junk journals, gifts or ambitious landscapes, you’ll gain confidence and experience by trying my projects.

I just came back from taking a break and heard your comments on aging!! I have children your age!! My Dad lived to be almost 94 and I really do have his genes so I figure I might have another 13 years to go. I want to paint myself into Heaven so I can't let anything to slow me down! I paint on any piece of paper within my sight. Some of it looks terrible but I call this practice work and it is OK, only for my eyes anyway. Thank you for your relaxing and educational videos, you are my favorite artist to follow. Enjoy your time away from the farm. We were very much tuned into the recent events surrounding the passing of your precious Queen Elizabeth II. My eyes wept many tears during this time and my heart is heavy for your country and the family of the Queen.

Hi Gail, and thanks so much for your messages. I'm flattered that you have just taken about 8 years off my age and I'll do my best to live up to it! I love your comment "paint myself into Heaven" and it is so apt (I just painted a rainbow to commemorate the Queen) I'm going to use that phrase as part of the title. So thank you for that inspiration! Thanks so much for your support, I really appreciate it xxx

I so enjoy your videos Diane, your painting style, seeing your beautiful farm life and listening to your voice. Your voice reminds me of a dear English friend that I used to share the stage with in a local community theatre. I am a senior now too - I will be 75 in December, and also very aware that the years are passing. I don't have a lot of time for painting, as I am still actively serving in my church and in the local community - but when I do, I LOVE it and appreciate all you do to make it more FUN!! Blessings!🍀(and I just made a small donation, will do more as I am able. And I just bought a couple of Lorna Scobie books to play with!)

Your saving paper for posterity made me laugh. My Mother was a “hobby” painter who took a few classes at the local junior college. She knew EVERYTHING about painting and was determined to turn me into a “painter”. Her only problem ?, she was beyond frugal. She made Scrooge look generous. She stood over your shoulder instructing your every stroke and warning you about the sin of wasting paper if you made an error! I’m sure her reams of “saved” paper contributed to her funeral pyre! And no, I never learned to paint. But I enjoy watching you!!

Oh my. That certainly squashed any potential you had of learning to paint when you were a child. What a shame!! My mother was a perfectionist. Nothing was ever good enough for her. You know, just like myself, I have heard of so many people who are well past their prime who are learning to paint now. I’m soon 65. And I feel that I may not be good at it but it’s a whole lot of fun. I’ve learned by watching Diane that I no longer need to be a perfectionist. I’m SO thankful to her for giving me the opportunity to do what I’ve always wanted, without being afraid of making a mistake. Now I can carry on for the rest of my years with NO FEAR. 🥳

I agree, I feel 12 in my heart and spirit, and feel way more joyful than I ever have and free to do exactly what I want at age 68!… Whike it may sound a bit sad that no one “needs”me, as a mom or wife (because kids are grown, 1 passed and hubby passed as well). You can choose to live on and be a more carefree person, than you ever thought possible. I play with my dog, and I even “forget” to wash the dishes, until the next day, every once in awhile! … very blessed indeed, I say my prayers do my best to stay healthy and never dwell on past sadness!… …I always love your uplifting video videos as always… Thank you!

Diane, I love this sweet painting! My craft room is small and doesn't have the best lighting so I quite often spread my painting materials on the kitchen table which is a long Italian bench style one. I take up the entire length but try to keep the other half cleared for my husband. I am always asking him if my stuff is in the way and tell him I can move it so it doesn't look so cluttered (I do clear it all away for mealtime) but he always says the same thing....he likes seeing it all and enjoys the creations and seeing me enjoy it so much. When your videos come on, he asks, "Is that Diane?" Then he looks over my shoulder to watch a bit of your videos. He thinks your voice is very calming and appreciates the encouragement you've given me. So nice to have that kind of support when you are stretching yourself out of your comfort zone to learn something new. Your suggestion of using a sketch book for practice is a good one. I've really gained confidence practicing in that before putting the paint to a larger piece of paper. As always, I thank you for your inspiration, and now your Saturday Secrets xo

Hi Carolyn thanks so much for sharing your lovely thoughts, and please say hi to your husband from me and give him a hug for being such a super-supportive chap! The lighting is so important, isn't it! I can only paint in the morning here in England because the house faces north and only gets reasonable light in the morning. And the atmosphere isn't the same as when you are in your own special painting place! Glad you are still enjoying and benefitting from the videos - you've been such a support for so long please know we are so very grateful to you for your wonderful comments and shares xxx

My 14th. I couldn't resist the urge to watch another video (the third today). And yes when we are older and having less time to live there is this feeling we don't have time enough to get everything done. This makes me a bit nervous and not foccused: always the feeling of not doing enough. This is not a good feeling or approach to learn to paint. Your videos individuali have there own point of things to learn: I watch them also this way : one at a time and seeking what I can learn from it. And I try to find in every video an expression of your sense of humor. This one : you mentioned that you had to eat ( telling about your patrion) but it wouldn't harm to lose some weight 😅 your suggested materials are without any doubt good but unfortionaly I cannot buy every new suggested material. Maybe when I am more advanced . Have a nice day wim

Thanks so much Wim for your thoughtful and interesting comments! I’m honoured that you are organising your watching of my videos in this way. You are certainly my best student! And remember, you don’t need many materials to create, just the desire to create!

😂You are so funny with some of your remarks! It is true about getting older. I had started doing watercolor for 4 years now, which I thought was so hard. I should have started doing watercolor years ago cause I really enjoy it.😊 I really enjoy your videos and I try to paint along with you when I can. Love the green sheep ❤ Thanks again. 😢Sorry to hear about the Queen Elizabeth II. I really liked her.

I love your videos and gentle and fun style of teaching! Thanks to you, I’ve made art a daily practice - whether that’s painting or doodling or simply trying to learn more about art. I’ve bought the book you showed as well as the Kuretake paints - both of which I enjoy immensely. (I might also have bought the Kuretake graphite paints, so another video using them in a project would be lovely!) Also, the sheep has a lovely color of fleece, which would be a lovely color for a sweater. 😊 Have you tried dyeing yarn or wool? There is something incredibly satisfying in dyeing wool, spinning it into yarn, and then knitting something with it. I’ve had fun playing with small samples of wool and various plant materials for dyeing. Highly recommend trying it out if you haven’t already. So much fun! Thanks for creating such wonderful videos and introducing me to the joys of painting! ❤

Hi Karma, thanks so much for your lovely comments! I have indeed done wool dyeing, although not recently. When my children were young we explored making natural dyes from hawthorn, oak, chestnut, elder and so on and I still have the sample book we made showing the different colors (so soft!) that the plants gave to the fleece we spun. I have a flock of sheep and every year I try to spin and knit from their fleeces. I wish I had more time to do it, but right now the channel is taking up most of my time! So glad you're enjoying the paints and the book! Happy painting!

I love your art so much, and your gentle way of teaching is exactly what I've needed. I'd like to support you, but it's all so confusing. I don't want to miss out on the social aspect of it, so my question is this. If I join your Patreon or KZread, will the Facebook group be the same one or are these separate? Which do you prefer? If I follow you on Patreon or KZread, does that mean I'll miss out on the conversation in the paid FB group? I follow you in the free FB group and really enjoy it, but then the paid group would be yet another one to follow, correct?

Yes, yes and yes to everything you said about aging! I never feel old in my head, but looking in the mirror is another thing entirely! It's inspiring to hear that even you need to shake things up a bit and learn new things.............starting watercolor painting a few months ago at age 60 - a craft very different from my other hobbies, has definitely energized me and your channel and commentary and ideas have been a big part of that. So thank you very much! A quick question about the Drawell brushes - I am finally going to "treat" myself to some - now that you been using the new ones - would you recommend getting a few of each? Would I benefit from working with both? Since the brushes are inexpensive, but the postage is not - I may as well order a "bunch" at one time! Thanks for any advice! (Enjoy your holiday - thanks for posting even while away! Hope your airbnb is a good one - I use them frequently - better than hotels!)

Sorry Tracy for the delay in answering your question! I am only just managing to keep up with the comments. Yes, I'd suggest you get a few of both types. You'll enjoy the Maestro ones especially for detailed work, and the red ones are excellent "work horse" brushes as well as being totally capable of dealing with detail. The red sizes I use most are 5, 8, 10 and 14 and I also have size 3, 5 and 7 or 8 in the Maestro ones. Have fun and thanks again for your support and input into the channel!

I don't want to make a mistake ordering directly from overseas, never done this before. The brushes sound like they would be an absolute dream to own!

It’s good to fight the good fight. The Bible mentions fighting the good fight of faith. To me it means trusting and relying on Jesus every single day. Death may come before He returns but we can know He has saved us and that we’ll get to spend eternity with Him. There is the best hope I. The only hope of Christ. I pray that all who read this would know Him and believe in Him. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Thanks for all you teach us. A good teacher teaches others how to learn and you do that ❤
