How to paint tone and shadows in watercolour - simple tone, volume and shadows
Ойын-сауық
Do your paintings look flat? Are you trying to recreate our 3D world on 2D paper and fnding it difficult? By using tone you can create believable shadows and highlights and this will give your work real volume.
In this short film, I will show you two different ways of controlling the tone (light/dark) of your watercolour - through glazing and layering or by working direct. We will look at how to darken colours for shadows so that they stay vibrant, but also how to mute and darken colours without adding black. And of course, we also learn to control lightening our colours through the amount of water we use.
By the end you should be a lot more confident about controlling the tone of your paint and creating realistic shadows and volume.

Thank you very, very much for providing a very clear, complete and concise explanation. I am spending my week practicing on basic forms with tonal variation, and the cast shadows have been the worst of my problems. This video was perfect. I can’t wait to have another go at this tomorrow.
