How to Paint Rocks in Watercolor by Always Wandering Art

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Rocks come in many shapes and sizes, and they come many colors too! In this video, we explore easy ways to painting different types of rocks, such as smooth granite rocks and long sharp jagged rocks. I also show you how NOT to paint a rock, as I fall victim to the all too common mistake - overbrushing! Tune in to find out how I redeem myself.

Thanks for leaving in the "what not to do". More artists are beginning to leave in the mistakes and its so very valuable.

Very nice video, thanks for making it. I've always struggled with rocks. Question for you(in a somewhat related area), would you do something similar to suggest architectural stone textures? I love to paint when I travel to Europe, and I'm always attracted to old buildings, houses, squares, etc., and I'm always looking for good ways to suggest these surfaces. Thanks!

Thank you! Yes, I think that similar concepts apply. For example, a palette knife can be used to create texture in brick or other architectural stones if showing those stones up close, but if they are further away they would not have as much detail. Having a light and shadow side can also help enhance the painting.

Great . Do you let any other colors dry while doing the rock or are you wet or wet the entire time?

  • @alwayswanderingart

To create hard edges I wait for the paint to dry. Soft edges are best done wet on wet but can also be diffused later with clean water.
